There are some terrific light shots in this thread.
As for me I like to use light and shadows in my portraits and street shots to accentuate the images. If you can pull it off it makes images more captivating. And there are lots of photos here by others that demonstrate that in "trumps".

Some older photos of mine back in the days when I was still using elaborate fames. 
At first blush there is nothing particularly special about the light in this first shot. But as I looked closer I came to realize that I especially do like the way the light reflected from the misty low clouds in the hills above, plays on the top of the tree. Without that simple interplay it would be a much less interesting picture in my view as the light is otherwise fairly flat and mundane.

Something the same might be said of this shot with the light shining though the low clouds misting the forest. It adds considerably to an otherwise mundane picture I think.

And here is much the same scene pictured in portrait mode. Of all of these three shots I would say this is my favorite.
