I'm on the hunt for a better wide lens in the 28mm range in F2.8 in any of the following mounts; M42, Nikon AF or non-ai, Pentax k, Canon FD or Minolta AF. I'd probably be willing to go up to $150 max., but a $100 would be better. It seems from what I've read over the years about different makes, and having used the FDn 2.8, that the 2.8's seem to be more middle of the road type of lenses, some good some not so good, while the 28 F2's and the 24 f2.8's can be real gems. I'm not looking to spend a bundle on a occasionally used lens but would like to add one to my collection for when I need one. Any insight would be appreciated.

the best is the Contax 28/2.8

period. it walks over everything on the bench and embarrasses most 50s. that includes the Nikon AI-s.

if a vintage 28 costs 100 dollars, it's because it's pretty mediocre or pretty slow. save your cash for one of the good ones ala the contax, OM 28/2, 28/2.8 Ai-s etc

If you buy the AF-Nikkor 28/2.8, be sure you get the D-version. The original AF-Nikkor 28/2.8 used the same optics as the mediocre Series-E 28mm. The D-model was a completely new optical formula and is very good.
