The Candle Factory at Nimbin resides in the building that was originally the butter factory for the area. It was built in the early nineteen hundreds and was operational until 1952. A couple of other businesses share the location including a popular cafe on the opposite side of the old factory facing Mulgum Creek. I dropped in the other day for the first time ever and picked up some of their seconds which are basically their standard table candle and are sold as seconds because of some small defect in the appearance ... they are half price! I asked these very friendly people if they minded me taking a few pics while I was there and they were pleased for me to do so.

All pics with Leica M240 and Zeiss Biogon 35mm f2

So beautiful objects made in what seems to be a rather messy workplace !
Excellent series, thank you for posting.

Now that brought back some memories Keith... in my younger days I owned a candle factory!

And yes, the accumulation of wax/mess/etc. is typical.

The mind boggles as to what would happen if a fire started in the building. I imagine it would be very hard to put out!

The most beautifull and colourful.... messy place imaginable!! Fantastic location to test your lenses and camera for their ability to record vibrand colour.

These have an intimate feeling, and the character of the colors and "muted" (is that the right word?) exposure helps quite a lot.

Thanks for showing the images. It looks like an interesting place to visit and photograph.

I took a gander of Nimbin on Wiki and thought I would show the link here. Since I have never been to Australia I found the article informative, especially the psrt on the funny weed trade.

It's a pretty wild place and pretty well matches what wiki said about it. Sadly about a year ago two of the town's most significant and feral buildings burnt down ... the Rainbow Cafe and the Nimbin Museum. The Museum was a bizarre old place with half an old VW Combi hanging out the front of it. :D

Unfortunately the drug trade has created some real issues ... a lot more amphetamine users there these days. Some very damaged looking people wandering around.

After getting the candles I was in town at one of the cafes having a coffee and one of the locals wandered over to my table, sat down and held out a very large joint for me to have a toke on. I thanked him kindly for his generosity but pointed out that I had about 200ks to drive back to Brisbane after my coffee! :p
