a bit of rff history arrived at my door today.
yes, brian's canonator is now in canadian hands.

it looks like a beast next to the p but when i got the ruler out there really was very little difference.
just the look of it i guess.

i put the 85 on her and man it weighs in as a heavy combo.
nothing i can't handle though. `;)
the film advance lever seems a bit bigger but the film rewind lever is tiny by comparison.

the finder is clean & clear but dimmer than the p.
maybe dimmer is not quite accurate.
when looking thru the p there is a bit of a blue tint to things.
with the 7 the blue is much more pronounced / noticable.
(this, while focussing on my computer screen)

the shutter speed selector is massive compared to the p.

the biggest difference is the sound of the shutter.
the p has a quiet little snick while the 7 sounds more like a very quiet slr without a mirror.

but i am very pleased. my p has company and now i can shoot a bit longer (tele wise) without changing lenses.

just don't know how it will all fit in the domke...

a very old song comes to mind...'if you want to be happy for the rest of your life-make an ugly woman your wife'...
...yes, i'm very happy!

thanks again brian!!

Congrats, Joe!

(I'm waiting for a Canon 50mm f1.8 from Brian that he let slip through his fingers my way.)

How about a new family group picture, Joe? The Canonator sounds masculine to me, and the P is a beautiful woman. Hey, leave them in a darkroom together and you may end up with a litter of Canonets!

Congrats Joe ! You're experiencing the Canonator power in your hands !

So you got a 7... now I MUST look for that P, or similar ;)

You are now sproting a whole lotta chrome my friend. Be careful of your eyes when you are walking around on a sunny day.

Congrats

I guess the Canonator marched through Customs! No one was going to question the value placed on it!

The Canon 7 is a loud camera compared to the Leica's and even Nikon's. It is louder than the L1 with its cloth shutter. How does it compare with the Bessa R?

Frank's lens will be on its way this morning. It is pretty. I think we need a camera and coffee shot of his camera with the Black Canon 50mm F1.8 vs the Canonator with the Chrome 50 f1.8. It will be a beauty contest...

My ears say quieter than a Bessa (which has double blinds on its shutter, after all.) It's bound to be a bit noisier than a Leica because the shutter curtains have more mass.

Note, though, that it shouldn't be a LOT noisier... if it is, the curtain brakes may be out of adjustment. I have been told that Canon used separate brakes on the opening and closing curtains (sophisticated feature) and not every repair person knows how to set them up correctly; if they're off, the shutter will work but be noisier than it has to be.

If you don't KNOW your repair person is a Canon shutter expert, though, it may be best to leave well enough alone.
