New or used?
New would be the 50 Summarit, I believe, then the 50 Summicron.
Used would be a 50 "rigid" Summicron or a 90 Tele-Elmarit, maybe.
Actually, the 135mm Elmarit with "eyes" is pretty cheap these days too.

The least expensive would be a screwmount lens with an adapter to M mount. They work just fine and most of my photography is done with this kind of setup.
Cheapest with best quality would probably be a Canon 35mm or a Voigtlander. Maybe even a user Leica Summaron.
Wider than that and you'll have to go with Voigtlander

I'd vote for Jupiter 12 with a a generic ebay adapter for the cheapest good lens. I was quite pleased with mine, but traded up for something faster.

Voightlander ltm and m mount lenses are comparatively affordable.

If you really want a "normal" used Leica lens, look for a 40/2 Summicron C, or classic 50/2 or 50/2.8 collapsible, those cost the least, you should be able to get either for US 300, if you are patient.
Otherwise there are lots of good alternatives, foremost from Cosina Voigtlander.
I recommend to stay away from Russian lenses, unless you want to spend a lot of money and time trying, fixing, returning, etc. With exception, maybe of the Jupiter-12.

I agree with the recommendation of a Voigtlander LTM lens with an M adapter.

I got an Industar 22 collapsible from Fedka and an adapter from a pretty sketchy site called Dino Direct. I got it off ebay, but that's where the packaging points to...
$50 lens
$10 adapter
I like it.

Any lens you just bought:
you'll sell at a loss,
and the money's already spent so it costs nothing.

Well, I am trying a different route for a wide-angle lens for my Leica. The widest RF coupled lens that I have is a 35mm. Wide-angle lenses: focus is not critical. 24mm lens, scale focus and hyperfocal will work. I bought a Nikon F to Leica M adapter, and will use my Nikon 24mm F2.8 as my wide. I have the 52mm Hot Mirror filter, cost $10 used. The retro-focus design negates the need for "6-bit coding". i also have the Nikkor 20/3.5 and 2.1cm F4. The latter- might try on a Film camera. Of course, on the M3- no need, and no need. I'll be doing a thread on it.

Brian,
Where did you get the Nikon F to Leica M adapter? I have a nice Zeiss 25mm f/2.8 lens that I'd love to be able to use on my M6. Hopefully the adapter would cost less than a new 25mm lens

Cheapest: still the Orion 15 with LTM to M adapter. It is a 28mm rangefinder coupled lens. I just sold mine for Euro 95.
