The coming "high speed wide" in XF mount

Fuji have only announced that it should be projected for availability at the end of the year (or was it early 2015?).

Speculation on the web suggested a 16/1.4
What do you think is the most likely angle?

Personally, I'm patiently waiting for it.

A 16 f1.4 is gonna be one honking big piece of glass. I hope it is a 16f2 myself to keep it to a reasonable size. As opposed to a fast lens, I actually would prefer a 16f2.8 to keep it small and lightweight.

I would not buy a 16f1.4. Maybe a 16f2 but definitely a 16f2.8. I wish sigma would releaee a 14 and 16 f2.8 art series lens for that matter in x and SA mount.

my hope is for a 16/2.8 as well.
i don't really see/have a need for a very fast 16, in fact, i'm enjoying the very slow 16-50 zoom…talk about a great walk around lens!

16/2.8 would be GREAT! Their 18 is f/2; would it be difficult to make a 16/2? Hey... maybe its going to be a 23/1.0! 😛

If it's being announced as a "high speed" lens, what's the point of hoping for an f/2.8 max aperture?

As it is, the 18/2 is practically a pancake lens, while the 14/2.8 is amazingly compact given the performance.

For myself, the XF system is more for low light, people, and events. My needs on the wide end don't include landscape, for which I rely wholly on the Sigma Merrill cameras.

I don't need to cover every focal length, either. Although the 56/23 combo would fit my needs best, it is too big and too expensive. I'm much more likely to find that the 35 plus another lens on the wide side fits my budget.

I mean, Fuji gives a stark choice between the 23/56 vs the 18/35.

While I'd be find with the 18, I think I'd want something wider, and faster. Paired with the 35, and the 55-200, I think it would do what I want/need at the lowest cost.

Since it is a super wide, that puts it beyond the 18 as u say. Just saying my preference is more toward a 16f2.8.

Needs a 90 and 135 f2.8 plus 100 macro to fill out the tele end, but otherwise pretty well covered. Then there are the three Zeiss fixed focal lengths. And odd assortment of third party manual focus lenses in x mount.

4 zooms plus three more on the way.

Only m43 has as good of a selection.

The canon/nikon 24mm f1.4's are extremely popular photojournalism lenses and are the same size as the 35mm f1.4s.

I for one hope it is a 16mm f1.4 the same size as the 23mm f1.4 which to me is the perfect size and weight for the xp1.

A 16/2 would be my preferred compromise between a huge lens (16/1.4) and a smaller, slow lens (16/2.8)

The smaller APS-C sensor means 2.8 is too slow (f 4, equivalence to a 24 X 38 mm sensor) for my use. The f 1.4 aperture sounds attractive. But in my experience (admittedly limited) OOF rendering is difficult to optimize as this focal length.

Fuji makes no secret of wanting to get system converts from Canikon. I'm just not familiar enough with DSLR territory, so I had no idea what would be considered the must-have high speed wide. If it is indeed 24/1.4, then I expect that it will be the next target for Fuji.

Oh boy! I don't need an 1.4/16 (even the Sigma 1.8/24 I have for my 5D, I hardly ever shot wide open).
I finally want an AFFORDABLE wide angle lens for Fuji. Perhaps something like a small 4.0/14 for under €300,-
THAT would be great.

I love my Fuji and I think the lenses are amazing. But the prices are impudent.

Compare:

Sigma 10-20 = €380,-
Tamron 10-24 = €400,-
Tokina 12-24 = €550,-
even the
Canon 10-22 = € 520,- !!

Pentax 12-24 = €780,-

and Fuji?
Fuji 10-24 = €1000,-

The only super wide zoom that goes for a similar price is the
Nikon 12-24 = €1000,-

I was under the impression that this was going to be in ~$999USD range??? As I only keep my 5d around to use the 17-40L for architecture -selling this pays for the 10-24 and then some.


Back on topic... I just feel like I'd be too hemmed in with a single prime on the wide end. That said, I will probably wait and see what the results are like before passing any further judgment.

I'm with kent on this one. I would rather have the smaller, cheaper, 'slower' 2.8 lens than one that is sexy and fast and remain in the camera store simply because either I don't have the funds to buy a big fast lens and/or I can't justify the cost per use of it either. I rarely shoot wide open for work and in fact most of my images are shot around 5.6 so 1.4 on a very wide angle lens, for me, is a waste of money. To me it comes down to the way I purchase most of my gear, if the price is compatible to the amount of use I will get from the item or if there is a strong need for it, will determine the purchase. I don't fall in love with fast lenses especially when I really like the APSC sensor being small, meaning small cameras and hopefully small lenses. Fast, AF lenses contradicts the notion of keeping it small. But hey, if you like wide angle lenses and shoot wide open with low light I guess then Fuji is on the right track for those customers, however folks like myself that need to justify the cost, a fast 24mm eq might be nice to have but for me an added and unnecessary expense.
