The Darker End of the Art

Fascinating read. I wonder what caused her to jump to her death! Her self portraits have a feel to her thoughts of a troubled mind. In the photograph titled 'Talking to Vince' it looks as spirits are coming from her mouth. I think she was demoniacally oppressed to say the least. Perhaps even posessed.

Reminds me of the story of Diane Arbus, another female photographer who died by suicide fairly early in her career. Arbus worked longer than Francesca Woodman, but left an even smaller number of finished works. Not counting her magazine work and other commercial stuff, Arbus left about 100 fine art photographs as her legacy. I wonder what drove Woodman to kill herself?

Chris, do you mean 100 fine art images for Arbus (with multiple copies of each) or 100 physical prints?

Either way, its much smaller than I expected.

thank you for the link, Barrette, it was indeed very interesting. i hadn't previously heard of Francesca or her family... it really is sad to think of what she could have achieved if she were still alive today. to think of anyone let alone such a young person committing suicide... :(
