"decisive moment is a bourgeoise term for a photograph reflecting not more than a good reaction from a photographer" David Douglas Duncan had a fight with words with HCB in a Paris cafe: DDD accused HCB for fooling a complete generation of young photographers to wait for the "decisive moment" that NEVER CAME... and losing their chance to depict reality and history at the same time... The "thing" is to shoot and observe, edit later.. You never know what´s going to happen and also if the action and drama already peaked....

I always thought this was HCB's greatest trick, getting people to believe in the magic ... to the point other photographers even got/still get pissed off! Personally, and this is my interpretation, belief and opinion, I think HCB liked to talk up a nice axiom; a little cocktail of truth, half truth, bluff, bullsh*t and genuine principle - and I think there are plenty of others who do the same, because if the photographer/artist is any good then after the edit and the waffle....you sound like the 'real deal,' until another photographers argues with you in a cafe perhaps

If I had a fraction of the skill that the stonemasons had I'd be a very happy man indeed. This is Corpus Christi in Cambridge but Europe abounds with some stunning examples of medieval stonemasonry that blows you away. The fact that these cathedrals and colleges must have towered above the humble dwellings, taverns and stables that made up the rest of the towns and cities and been seen from miles away is too often lost amongst todays buildings.
