Back to the drawing board.
Turns out that the tool I was using to collimate the lens (the M8) is off at infinity. :bang:
So that several days' work is out the window and I'll have to start fresh with the M9 later in the week.
But anyways, when the lens is in focus, the plane of focus is sharp. Good stuff.
EDIT:
I got the focus figured out at closest range out to infinity. Used the M9 to collimate the lens. What was wrong was that the secondary helicoid was rotated 180 degrees inside the lens barrel. This allowed infinity to be right on and the fine adjustment of focus was "wandering" due to small adjustments as well as probably a little bit of slop between the primary helicoid, secondary helicoid, lens mount and RF cam follower. The 180 degree rotation allowed me to get close but not spot on. I just went outside to check infinity against distant lights and it lines up fine. Close focus is good and repeatable as long as I'm holding still. I'll post some real photos from the lens soon.
