The Greatest 35mm (FL) lens of All Time.

So let decent gear be just the respected tool, not an idol to be worshiped, that facilitates the photographer's effort and makes the photo possible.

Agreed.

Here's my Lux ASPH on my M7 with Leicavit. Scratches and all.
It's a tool, not an idol.
😉

PS: That's a modified Contax hood (GG-2). I cut a vent in the side. The square Leica hood was too big and intrusive for my taste.

I can't believe all the Noctilux bashers. That lens is so unique, its images are so unique that it simply adds a je-ne-sais-quoi to images. I love that unique Noctilux.

NB23, I wasn't bashing it. Out of focus areas at f1.0 and f1.2 are definitely unique. I'm just not sure I'm into the swirly ellipsoids present when bright lights are in the background. I had a strong urge to buy one for the fun of playing around with low light environments and shallow depth of field. Luckily my friend has one and I was able to use it. I find the CV nokton photos to have more pleasing background and less distracting from the main subject. In the noctilux images I tend to notice the unique backgrounds a lot more.
That said, I'm definitely a believer in using a tool for awhile before making a decision, and I haven't had enough time with a noctilux to learn how to use it well and plunk down the change right now. One came up on SF craigslist for $1800 and I was pretty close to getting it, but I'd have to sell too much stuff and I couldn't justify it. It's still there if anyone local is interested. The price on ebay has gone up after the M8 came out.....

Unfortunately, the Summilux 50 Asph. and the Noctilux are complementary, not supplementary, so different they seem to me to be. I am not surprised that many users find they like to have both - a situation which is perhaps similar in the 75 focal length between the Mandlerian Summilux 75 and the Summicon 75 AA.

I am a fan of the hexar af lens, too. My only gripe with it is the distortion you get at close focusing, similar to that with the pre-asph summicron. The new asph summicron does not have that problem (and the summilux asph probably doesn't either, I have no experience with it). That being said, I still love my black hexar af.
