Someone spotted one in the wild in Hong Kong. I really don't understand Hasselblad's direction here.. Not only is it ugly IMHO, but I don't really c a real value add..
If they had gotten Sony to put their 36mp sensor in it, and upgrade the digital path accordingly for example, that would be a different story. As I understand it, it is really nothing more than a Nex 7 w/ a new skin.

I actually thought the promo photos made it look quite nice. The more real-life photo makes it look somewhat worse though.
More off putting for me is that it is just a re-badged NEX. Nothing against the NEX,but like the Panaleicas, it just reeks of a brand being simply that, a brand, and nothing more. Historically, you could have thought "That's a Leica, I'll probably like how that works", but now it's nothing to do with Leica or Hasselblad how it works, and purely a sales exercise, which I find distasteful.

In the past, there were some cameras that may not have seen the light of day w/o such a collaboration.. I don't think the company doing the manufacturing would have done it on their own. Examples are
- Fuji/hasselblad came out w/ the xpan
- Fuji/Consina came out w/ the Bessa III (gf670) and later the wide version
Are some examples I can think of.. In both cases I am not sure Fuji would have done it on their own. I for one am glad they collaborated. I love my xpan and gf670.
The new hasselblad sadly is nothing more than a re-skin of the nex7. The Leica s2 on the other hand was a totally in-expected and interesting beast, whereas the hasselblad is a wtf moment.

The best review of I've read for that thing can be found here.

Best quote ever:
It’s what Marie Antoinette would use were she alive today. It’s a camera of such disgusting, aristocratic indulgence that it makes Liberace’s Christmas costume look like a poncho doused in the salty tears of dying pandas.

Sure, the XPan and Bessa are great cameras, and it's great they were created.
However, I'd say it's safe to say that the Panasonic cameras would have been created with or without Leica putting it's logo on some of them. And as good as the Panasonic cameras may or may not be, if they did not appear, I doubt many would consider them a great loss to the industry.

I certainly don't mean to criticise Panasonic cameras, my only point is that Leica has not added any value to them, and as far as I know, don't play a role in what does and does not get made. The GF1 as far as I know, has nothing to do with Leica.
With regard to the "panaleicas", the industry might not consider it a great loss, but William Albert Allard and David Alan Harvey, might beg to differ. Allard, in particular has waxed nearly poetic regarding his GF1.
They are excellent tools... As are virtually all the so-called pro-sumer/enthusiast cameras. The "many" that would disagree are probably impeded in other ways. It's probably not the camera that is holding them back. Assuming one has the wherewithal, it is a matter of choice what one chooses to use. But that shouldn't be confused with incapable.
Disclaimer: Working stiff with two D3 bodies some lenses.... and a G1 that's fun and has paid for itself.

It appears that most if not all were just rebadged panasonics such as the Pano lx3-7 line.. However the x1 and x2 do not have an equivelent in the Panasonic lineup. I have always wondered if this was the first true Leica only digital camera or was this a collaboration between Panasonic or someone else and Leica.

You are correct. Ahhh...Lindsay Lohan perhaps? Seems like just the thing for her.

It's more hideous than a baboons rear end. Simply because baboons are born that way, not designed!

. . . And Rob F begs to differ as well. I've been a D-Lux fan since my first one, the D-Lux 3. I still get lots of use out of it, but when the D-Lux 4 came out, I added that, to get the f/2 lens with 24mm capability at the wide end. And now having added I the D-Lux 6, I am just blown away with the low-light-high-ISO capability in such a small camera. ISO 6400 and F/1.4 too! And very little noise even at 6400!

I'm sure she'd have the good sense to spend the money more wisely, like e.g. on cocaine.
But really, I don't think there are a lot of rich people who would buy this thing. Most rich people, just like anyone else, don't like to be taken advantage of. Think about it. If you pay $5 for something that you later find out costs $1 everywhere else, you're going to be pretty annoyed, even if the money itself doesn't matter much.

Unless you're the sort of person who buys the Leica D-Lux series over the Panasonic LX series

When iPhone apps first came out... Reminds of the $999 app (or whatever was the max for an app at that time) and all it did was display a picture of a set some diamonds if I remember correctly. The author of te app specifically said it would only do this and some other minor stuff. Basically he put it in the App Store to c if anyone rich enough would just buy it.. I think a sort of in your face type of thing. It turned out some people did buy it (can't remember how many, just remember more than 2).
Anyway, my point is u can never tell what someone is going to buy and for what reason.

Case in point, I know a guy from a fairly wealthy family who bought the D-Lux and then a few months later his sister bought the Panasonic version. When he noticed they were the same camera he was furious.

Yes, the "I Am Rich" App got half a dozen of downloads but considering how many users there are on the App store that's a very insignificant amount. You can never tell what someone is going to buy but you can make an informed guess on whether or not many people are going to buy somethi

I think Hasselblad is hoping that enough people will buy it just because it says Hasselblad on it, just as your friend bought the dlux because it says Leica on it, not knowing that there was a Panasonic equivalent and in this case a Sony equiv. At least Leica did a simple re-skin that does not hide its origin.
For some people Leica is a status symbol... There are people who buy a Leica and never put a single roll of film thru it.. Some are pure collectors others just want to be seen with it.
There has got to someone who does not think this camera is just b*t ugly, or it would never have gotten this far.

Yes, that's what they (i.e. the investors who bought Hasselblad) are hoping for but I doubt it's going to work. My friend bought the dlux because he wanted to buy a p&s and thought if it's a Leica it must be good. But he doesn't really know anything about cameras. And that's the problem with the Hasselblad. Hasselblad is not nearly as well known as Leica and diesn't have the same kind of following. Most people who know the Hasselblad brand know a thing or two about cameras. And without the name recognition it also loses it's appeal as a status symbol. Also, the price difference between the D-lux and the Panasonic wasn't nearly as big as that between the Hasselblad and the Sony.

Well-known
I like it
Not the version on the rumors site, but some of the other versions. I really don't understand why people think it is ugly, but hey, I liked the look of the Pentax K01.
It is also a different development from the Panny Leica's as those were simply a badge swap (and maybe some minor software tweaks), Hasselblad changes the camera much more then Leica did. Also, we have to wait what changes inside are made until they hit the streets and somebody can compare it to the Nex 7.
Anyway, it should be available this month according to the official Lunar site!
