An idea for dealing with obnoxious posters: can a moderator place them on everyone's ignore list? That way they could continue to post and see their own posts, but no one else will.
Thanks for the hint (bookmarked for possible future use)!
I found that the export function in the current beta version of Lightroom is very easy to use, once configured. I can specify that I want my copies, say, 1280 pixels wide and maximally 200 KB big.
shun?
.
With "Tachy goes to Coventry", the mods can set a drunk to be globally ignored. The drunk can log in, they can post, they can see thier own posts. But to everyone else, it looks like they're taking a loooong break from the forum.
Or, a user can "miserabled" so that some pages don't load, some pages give errors, some pages are blank. It basically looks like there's a miserable internet connection. It becomes to tedious to stick around just to insult people, so the drunks leave.
There's a proverb for this in French: "Si tout les dégoutés s'en vont, il ne reste que les dégoutants" ("If all the disgusted leave, there are only the disgusting who remain").

should we shut the place down?
How many people here think that the mods are doing a rotten job, and should be replaced?
And how many think the opposite? Maybe I should do a poll. I'd vote for the opposite.
Cheers,
R.
I am not suggesting replacing the Mods. Joe opened this thread, and the insults started flying. One member deleted all of their posts on RFF.
....
So what? Some idiot got their nose out of joint and moved on. Good for them. I don't see what the big deal is?
I missed this! I agree this is out of bounds even for me. I'd hate to see Helen leave she is one of the best photographers I know. She is a friend over on flickr & whats so great about flickr is it's all about the photograph & the photographer as well as the equipment (gear). Ya know I haven't realised it til now but I can't recall ever seeing any nasty communication over on flickr like I have here. I'm sure it does go on I just haven't seen it.Typical exchange, was not on the "off topic" forum.

This type of behavior should not be tolerated.
I used to come here to get away from propaganda. And to find a healthy mix of gear description, photographic process and photography. I learned a lot. However, we continue to loose good photographers, who used to share photos and describe how they were done.
Gear and good photography may not be directly related. Whatever. I'm fully convinced however, that one's political opinion or budget have nothing to do with one's photographic output.
You have a tough job, Joe. But I do recommend to systematically close political threads as they show up; and act firmly against rude post(er)s.
And for the teachers: wisdom and modesty often grow together. My deepest respect to Bill P. and Tom A. We can all learn from them.

...and does anyone seriously think this would be said to Helen's face in a real bar, if other male members were present?
Personal attacks should not be tolerated. Rude and obnoxious behavior should not be tolerated.
