An idea for dealing with obnoxious posters: can a moderator place them on everyone's ignore list? That way they could continue to post and see their own posts, but no one else will.
 
A poll is not necessary and would not reflect how the membership actually feels.
As far as the job being done, forum members vote with their virtual feet- on the Internet, mouse clicks and finger strokes.

Personal attacks, wishes of violence, and threads that are full of bigotry and hatred should not be tolerated. They should be deleted (SINCERE THANKYOU, STEPHEN).

That's exactly what this utility let's you do; on top of that, you can define the amount of sharpening, you can define a copyright and a frame and it can upload directly to your own webspace, to where you can then post links. You choose whatever you want it do do, and leave out the rest. Fast and practical.

With "Tachy goes to Coventry", the mods can set a drunk to be globally ignored. The drunk can log in, they can post, they can see thier own posts. But to everyone else, it looks like they're taking a loooong break from the forum.

Or, a user can "miserabled" so that some pages don't load, some pages give errors, some pages are blank. It basically looks like there's a miserable internet connection. It becomes to tedious to stick around just to insult people, so the drunks leave.

i'm not aware of these options here but will check...i like 'a long time out'...
 
"The Tenth Victim" (google it). Set up a forum that members have a secondary login, can go at each other for anything they want. No one else sees it, must get a second login for it.

Do it outside of the 10th Victim channel, get banned.

I'm only here for one or two month, but I noticed only one guy who's clearly over the line regularly according to my taste: (may I name names?) this NickTrop character.

But... it's not that he's got nothing to say; he's not the internet-typical dumb troll. To me, he just seems kind of over the top, he probably has manic tendencies. And he's got the coolest avatar I've ever seen. That tiny greenish tough guy picture almost scares me. 🙂

And, should he ever start to annoy me I'll try the ignore list feature. 🙂

So, no, please do not shut RFF down. (You could do a poll, though...) 😉

I am not suggesting replacing the Mods. Joe opened this thread, and the insults started flying. One member deleted all of their posts on RFF.

Joe knows the answer to his own question better than anyone. He was also one of the original members that liked a quiet drink with friends after work. Too many of my friends have moved on.

Back to the W/NW forum for me. That is one place that does not get too many loud mouth drunks. The drunks can't take a decent picture.

Passive Agressive is not normally my style. I prefer nuking till they glow. So I'm thinking of it as concentrating on my photography. Many with custom made lenses. Most with the M8.

Okay that name came up, and Firesign Theater came to mind.

"NickTrop, Private Dick"... Oh Nicky, Nicky, Nick, Nick, Nick...

From now on, every time I see that name, "Nick Trop, Private Dick". (Nick Danger, Private Dick)

Moving on is one thing, taking the time to burn all your bridges by deleting posts one-by-one- glad he moved on.
 
I personally think this is a great forum, to risk sounding naive. I have learnt a lot and been pointed to many other places to learn.
I have had great and kind advice from people, and twice have pm'd members asking for advice because of the expertise and knowledge they have had. Both replied with great kindness and speed, and my messages were quite unsolicited. Amazing. Seems to me a pretty healthy sigh of a generous community.
And personally I think Joe should allow politics to be discussed heavily. I read an article about early magnum members, and blazing discussions about politics between them. How the world is, that's the question right?

I missed this! I agree this is out of bounds even for me. I'd hate to see Helen leave she is one of the best photographers I know. She is a friend over on flickr & whats so great about flickr is it's all about the photograph & the photographer as well as the equipment (gear). Ya know I haven't realised it til now but I can't recall ever seeing any nasty communication over on flickr like I have here. I'm sure it does go on I just haven't seen it.

& about P Net, Joe is right! it is a dying forum. & wasn't it some jealous mods that kicked out Al Kaplain? So apparently not all the throw a ways from over there are bad!

I'm also glad to see some renewed spark in the FSU forum here from new members. Fixing to have another contest. Haven't had one for so long a time & at one point the forum almost died. Much like the Bessa forum is now. Not many of us seem to be using Bessa's any more. & when someone does post something there is always complaining about how cheap made it is or how the shutter is too loud.

I fully agree with all your observations and points Roland.

There are plenty of places to go vent your spleen and insult people. Granted most of those places are not quite so safe for those inclined to do so as a forum dedicated to a narrow photography niche - this is true particularly in the real world, but also on the internet.

Coming here to discuss photography, and equipment, get and give advice, and get away from the constant bombardment of ideologues of most types was the true value of RFF.

Good example Brian. Those in support of the right to behave this way should know full well it is not confined to the Off Topic forum. (And does anyone seriously think this would be said to Helen's face in a real bar, if other male members were present?)

Also very good ideas regarding some of the tools available for controlling bad behavior, hopefully something will be considered. And I agree, Joe does a good job of course, under increasingly difficult circumstances.

Well, it does not take very much to realize that some members aren't worth responding to. Besides, it only encourages them.

Agreed, and that applies to threads about any and all topics. It is possible to discuss the most sensitive of subjects without resorting to insult and ad hominem attacks. I'm just sorry that the anonymity and cover offered by the internet seems to make that a rare occurrence. For example, I frequent a local blog that is, by and large, a reasonably civil place. But, one or two commenters invariably respond to questions or disagreement with personal insults and attacks. This sends the thread off the cliff because, try as we might, it is very difficult for most of us to ignore venomous attacks.

Things are not that bad here, by a long shot. But, I have seen comments clearly written as innocuous expressions of fact or personal preference, including my own, draw nasty attack responses from people who apparently cannot tolerate someone who doesn't see things exactly like they do. Why someone who, in effect, likes vanilla ice cream feels the need to skewer someone who says he likes chocolate ice cream is a mystery.

As for threads that go off track, does the site's software give mods the ability to move threads to other forums?
