the joy of photography

Film is dead? Dang, what am I going to do with all of the film in my freezer then??!

Well, sometimes dead bodies are frozen too (cryonics), and I guess you have some meat in your fridge also (unless you are a vegetarian), so what's the problem :D ?

Stewart, I applaud you for calling a bully out to show images that supported his position. This is a photography forum.

As far as the need for heavier and more moderation on the forum, that thread was just the tip of the iceberg. I have sent PM's and Posted to threads instructing the OP's on how to delete the entire thread as it had gotten out of control. This was after the OP's asked that the thread be closed.

I, and I suspect others, have grown tired of the Bullies that are trying to take over this forum. I have spent a lot of time and effort in promoting RF photography, even if my own work is something that passes muster only with my Mom. I've made lenses for some outstanding photographers on this, and other forums. I've given away a couple of cameras to get people started, and some to those on a limited budget.

I'm not going without a fight.

That's good but let's not become a police state!

More mods to enforce current regulations and rules is all that's needed IMO ... the rules themselves are fine as they are.

I also believe that off topics like politics and religion are ok provided people keep their cool, which they seldom seem to I admit. Maybe with more and broader moderation certain inflammatory individuals will tread a little more carefully!

I'll second both paragraphs on that. I don't mind discussion on other than photo subjects from time to time. But I see nothing to be gained from being rude if I disagree with any poster.

Perhaps all non-photo subjects should be immediately placed in the off topics forum, and they should not be placed in the recent posts areas as now. That way if you want to look for something off topic, you know where to go. If you don't, stay away. Politeness should still rule.

EDIT: BTW, I hope I have never come off as rude. If so, I hope anyone will feel free to so advise me, preferably by PM, but in the same post is also alright, as in case I have, I should correct the post in that thread.

Of course there are great photographers with indifferent cameras -- one of the best I ever knew was a retired submarine commander with a Mamiya Press, the early one with the mostly bad lenses -- and of course there are rotten photographers with the most expensive gear in the world. But in a forum where a good deal of attention is paid to gear, affordability must surely be a consideration.
...

Alright, now you've gone too far. Mamiya Press with bad lenses? The very idea. :D

Actually I have heard that often as well. Luckily I got in later. The Super Press that I have (again, a later one) can take much better photos than I am capable of seeing and getting for the most part.

Does this mean that film is dead comments will continue to be tolerated?

It is the opinion of some of our members and just as valid as those opinions that digital sucks. Hopefully these comments from both camps can be made with less sophomoric antagonism.

I've been gone for about 4 months, busy moving to Israel. When I returned here i noticed most of the topics were the same - this piece of gear vs that piece of gear, gear lust, etc. So, I haven't noticed that much of a change, although I do notice alot of new names.

Living in a small apartment in a sandy desert clime, I've basically given up on gear acquisition, just using my Leica Dlux-4 and iPhone camera for Photoblogging. So, I don't find things rude or hostile, just repetitive and boring. How many times do you need to hear how great this or that film Leica is or yet another review of the M9 or EP-1 or whatever it is. Just get a camera you like and use it to death.

/T
P.S. I hope my tone wasn't hostile. :)
P.P.S. And who gives a dang what anyone says about film or digital? Film won't die because someone here says it will and digital won't be all there is just because someone here says it will. As a famous Yosemite climber once said, "Can't we just climb?"

Just because what someone says to you is wrong, does not mean the comment can simply be put out of your mind.

If I say, "Film is not as popular as it once was, and is slowly being phased out" can be more readily dismissed than "You stupid moron, spending money on a new Leica MP when film won't be around for another year. Grow some balls and buy a Nikon D3x".

The latter is much more typical of a remark around here than is the former.

Welcome back! Look forward to seeing your comments and your photographs.

Whether you or I respond on the forum, we tend to carry insults with us. They stick with us, get us down. A forum should be a pleasant place to relax. I'm not a masochist.

exactly, the comment should have never been said, and if the poster needs to express himself in that way he should find someplace else to do it.

I think you are exaggerating greatly. Or you read all the threads I don't.

I am not exaggerating, and it should be safe to read any thread posted on this forum. None of them should leave me mad and upset after reading them. If they do, then it is time to crack down.

Brian is right, and he's not exaggerating: the wrong tone has been used many times on RFF, and I include myself here a couple of times I regret... What we must have clear, is that it's ourselves who can and must control that tone, not new mods or new laws... I'll do my best... Let's try:

Film is dying... Well, just a bit... And just like ten years ago... Yet it will take a few centuries... :)

Cheers,

Juan

I am not exaggerating, ...

I still think you are. Greatly.

Yes, that's true. But, should you now get mad and upset about my thinking that you exaggerate, then the problem lies with you. I just have a different impression and a different opinion. That's all.

You are discussing this in the tone of Brian's first example, not the second, so I think everyone can agree, it is nothing to be offended about. We don't have to agree with each other.

And unfortunately, there have been too many cases when a discussion is not pursued as you have, but in an insulting mean way.

Respectfully, I have been on this forum since its beginning and have made almost 10,000 posts.

I thought about not saying anything original on this thread, but simply posting examples from threads from the past. Most of those would be closed, the worst were deleted by the OP's. I instructed the OP's on how to delete their own threads, as they had gotten so far out of control.

So, this is a case where experience carries weight. You may have your opinion, it does not make me mad. You are entitled to disagree with me. A number of members feel as i do, many feel as you do. But for this example, I simply have more experience with it than most others.
