The Julie Project

Thanks for posting this, Ivo.
Indeed, not an easy story, but as powerful and moving a photographic opus as I think I've ever seen, and a side of life in the USA which we in other places seldom see hints of.
Extraordinary

I got a no permission on the site. I noticed you had an extra http:// as well, but even after taking that out I had no permission.

Kudos to the guy who did this ... I don't think I would have had the mental or emotional strength to see it all the way through.

Very brave people all round ... subjects and photographer!

This is an amazing set of photographs, but sitting there watching someone be so self destructive and doing nothing about it. That's nearly criminal.

The situation is tragic, the photographer shows amazing commitment...a sad business. But each time I see a story like this I can't figure out the value (other than the personal interest of the photographer) of this intrusion into someone's sad life. There are millions of sad stories like this. There will be millions more. What difference did photography make?

That is a valid question. I doubt the photography made any difference at all, but it seems like the photographer was a friend and Julie and her fam gained something from him. And when her kids are grown up they can gain some extra knowledge about their mother.......

Maybe it can make a change to some of the other millions of sad stories out there? I do not believe it myself, but I would like to be wrong.

Follow the link to her portfolio.

This woman. Darcy, has done some impressive work. I admit that I'd never

heard of her, but she has received the H. S. Smith Award for Humanistic

Photography, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

Fellowship, Soros Foundation/Open Society Institute

Individual Fellowship, Alexia Foundation for World Peace

Professional Grant, Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography

Professional Grant and World Press Photo.

Let me be clear, she is a good photographer. I'm not being critical of her photography. Or her motivation. I've always questioned, though, the ultimate value of the public's intrusion into these folks tragic lives. In the end, in this case, the outcome was still tragic.
