Damn, I am so paranoid, I keep my lens cap on all the time. Sometimes I miss a shot because I can't get it off fast enough or worst I don't take it off at all. Then when it is off and I am shooting, I'm always thinking about it. Which pocket I put it in, etc. I am a mess. Counseling, please.😱😱😱

I'm in the same boat a little bit... I find that there is a threshold after which you stop worrying about the cap being off. I usually calm down once I've found that I didn't put it back on immediately after a few shots & it is still in my pocket. Always putting the cap in the same place helps a little as well...

Calm Down...

Calm Down...

Put a UV Filter on the lens's. That way if you get a scrach, it is on a cheap filter, not your front element. I keep my lens cap in a shirt pocket, never lost one yet. You get a "cap keeper". it teathers the cap to your lens, or Strap lug.
Hope all works out

Find a plastic lid and use that. I have two old Leica lenses that have caps from beef stock cubes, my nikons sport tupperware lids and some old yogart caps. I have not looked for one for my 40/1.4 yet, but will take it to the food store and try looking around. I do need to find something for my 15/4.5 come to think of it.

My plastic ones seem to stay on much better than the CV ones. I never worry about loosing one as they can be replace easily. Take the lens to the market and see what fits. Once you find something, buy one to try it. After a week, go back and by several more.

Hope that helps.

This sounds like me. Also, if it's a "nice" cap (meaning especially a Leica or Konica metal one, or really any original maker cap), I take care there's nothing in the pocket that could scratch it up. Also, I make sure it's not going to be in a back pocket -- I wouldn't want to sit on it.

Yes, I see if you havs an OEM cap. I can understand the worry of lossing it of geting it damaged.

For OP'r -- Get a Cheap replacement for daily use. and keep the OEM cap at home.
Nevet had think about this before. New to RFF and just got my 1st RF. A Kiev 4a 1978. Don't think it is a collectable yet..(Well., I had a Canon III or IV RF in High School, And a Lieca M5 for a few shhort years after HS.)

But I have a Contax III my dad is sending me. So I have to consider OEM stuff and keep it in good shape.

If my cameras sit on the shelf, they have a lens cap. When I take it out to shoot I leve the caps at home because I always lose them otherwise.

I tend to use metal lens hoods and leave the hoods off. The lenses can be stored face down to keep the dust off. The hoods protect the lens from finger prints and knocks. When carrying the camera, I try to keep it with the lens pointing downwards until I need it.

The only down-side is... With a rangefinder camera the hood takes a nice chunk out of the viewfinder image.

My 25/4, 50/2.5 and 9cm lenses all have metal hoods (LH-1, LH-2 etc). I'm looking into getting a vented hood for the 35/1.7

Lens caps on a rangefinder are a bit of pain, but I must admit that I rarely forget to remove the cap before taking a photo.

Are you worried about losing the lens cap/scratching it in your pocket, scratching the uncapped lens, or missing shots due to the time it takes to remove the lens cap? The solution for any of these worries is to keep a UV filter on the lens and leave the lens cap off. Thank goodness you are shooting with a Bessa, so you don't have to worry about the sun burning a hole in a Eica shuter curtain.

My vote is for the shade. I use a shade all the time, I think it improves the contrast and protects the lens. I only use filters when I want a filter effect (yellow, red, polarizer, etc.) Nothing wrong with a Skylight or UV, but I only use what is needed.
I put my lenscap in the camera bag when I take out the camera - keeps it safe.
I love to have all the right stuff. I have a real Yashica lens cap, shade, filters, etc. I just like to do this for fun. 😎
