The M262 is weather sealed like the M240

Good to know this was not a cost-cutting measure. Leica's reply to my query:

"The camera construction on the M (Typ 262) is the same as the M (Typ 240) with the same main weather seals in place. However, as it has no LVF port on the back of the camera, it is more weatherproof (the Typ 240 is fully weather-sealed if the original hotshoe cover is in place, but not if being used with an external accessory on the hotshoe)."

Jaapv has pointed out, and I have confirmed, the "5mm" not a measurement of the basic body width, which is in fact near identical to the M9. It's just the control wheel on the 240 which gives that width.

Very misleading in the specs. (not you, but Leica)

When I still had my M-E and was using it alongside the 262 I didn’t notice the 262 feeling any thicker or heavier than my M-E. The official Leica dimensions lists the 240/262 as 5mm thicker. It’s the reduced weight of the 262 over the M240 that is the biggest factor when it comes to handling the 262.

If you look at the image you see that it was taken with the cameras lying on their backs, which is silly, as they have various buttons and wheels sticking out. If you mentally put them on their lens mount, or actually measure them on the image, they are identical.

Great review. I love my 262. I also have an M-E. I find 3200 ISO form the 262 very usable and if you don't nail exposure with the 262 at 6400 there is banding even if you go under by just a little.

Thank you for your review. I was always irritated by the M9 shutter sound, and that alone was enough to give it up and sell it after three years of occasional use. I wandered between Sony A7 and Nikon dslr's. After having seen and listened to your shutter sound video, I am really tempted by typ 262

The shutter on the 262 is so sweet and is very quiet. I also have an original MM and an M-E. So glad I bought my 262. It's also lighter in weight than the 240 and I think they are now readily available to. Murphy's in Louisville has some as does B&H last time I was on their site.

The 262 will be my future camera if I go digital after I graduate from school. I'm not sure whether or not the rate I'm shooting film is sustainable, an unfortunate reality. It's about a $60 a week habit. AND the 262 would let me shoot color and in low light. Mighty tempting. The extra quiet shutter is the icing on top.

Good to know the 262 is weatherproofed. I was shooting in the rain a few weeks ago with my m4, which promptly jammed once I got back inside.

Yes, they are. Dan did "something" last week to get ahold of one for me. They've always been a first-class outfit every time I have called and made purchases from them, making it an easy call to make when I finally wanted to make this purchase.

I certainly hope so... But I'll always photograph in some way or another. I agree about the m4--best built m, in my opinion.

I've seen the stuff you shoot with the 262--you wield it well. I got my darkroom set up for free from folks trying to give away their old enlargers, trays, timers, etc. always an option to throw out a line on Craigslist 🙂
