Defying what my instincts told me, I refrain from bringing a telephoto lens and an SLR to the annual local balloon festival.

Instead I bring the M4-P, the standard Elmar-M 50/2.8 (my only lens) and have at it.

How did it do? read it here.

Will,

I agree with Joe, very nice job. I think you got the good shots that told the story of the event. IMHO much better than some pretty colored pictures of stuff floating in midair.

Try to get a press pass next year. Think of some agency or entity that will sponsor you for right to use your shots. I've done it from time to time (at field level with the NY Mets was the most fun) and it's worked out well. Show them what you have and tell them you want to take it to the next level of telling the story.

Great stuff. Good to see another M4-P user out there.

Very nice series Will, and it is certainly complemented by your narrative. I agree with Bill - get the press pass for next year🙂

Ditto on the M4-P. What an awesome camera

Very nice Will, and your last two photos remind me of my dream- A lightly chopped '52 with cat eyes and moon rims.

All, thanks for the comments/compliments.

Joe: I agree, RF cameras have a certain 'incognito' feel to them. As though you're passing by unnoticed while recording moments.

Bill: I'll try to get a pass next year, I could get it through some jostling at the local photo-club (but... what fun is that? 🙂 )

GeroV: I'll be sure to use that camera a lot, still with one lens, though 😀

Mike: Twice I've seen similar vintage around here, hmmm I wonder if there's a Ford club somewhere here...

Vlad: I'm trying to train myself to use 50mm. I like what the wider angle lenses can capture more, but somehow I still like the 50mm look better. And there's my resolution to stick with one lens at least for the Leica 😛

Ondrej: You know, that's what I thought originally, but looking at these results, I'm happy that I made that choice. Anyone can take similar pictures of the balloons from where I stand. It'd be fun if I can get close, then colors would make a heck of a difference.

Francisco: Yessir, I deliberately let you get a glimpse of a tiny version of my mug 😀 Besides, the chrome on that Ford is really gorgeous 😛

Earl: Hmmm... contrarian... I like that 😛

BTW, Will, I did like your little documentary... and especially the well exposed Nikon-Canon couple. Good job!

I think that one is one of my favorites also, the distance is right, the expression is right, and the exposure is not too shabby.

Strangely, I rarely get way off using the M4-P considering it doesn't have any meter, and I just use sunny-16 rule on all those shots.

It proves to me how reliable the rule is when used with a very accurate camera.

Very nice. By comparison, everyone else's shots using digitals with zoom lenses will all look exactly the same...

Thank you, looking at those people reminded me of myself just a year ago. All digital, totally oblivious of my surroundings, just have one picture in mind, and when I finally see it on screen, I'm dissapointed, it's very colorful, but flat and dull. Not satisfying at all.

I just found this thread and have to say, a very nice series of photos ! I have to agree that is was brave to shot only in BW and with the 50mm. Really only sunny-16 rule ? No meter ?? Great ! The M4-P rules, right ? 🙂

Cheers,

maddoc

Thank you maddoc. Yes, sunny-16 and "what the heck, it's so dark, I'm just going to shoot 1/8th hand-held at f2.8 (max on the Elmar), and pray for the best..."

I was just as surprised when I saw the negative containing an image (of course you don't see the dark fuzzy outtakes on the blog 😀).

The M4-P and the Elmar are amazing in low-light.

Now, Will... how many did you throw away?

I have a very nice M3... but never, except for one roll, did I dare to go out without a meter.

Take care! 🙂

Well, considering my average of 1-5 keepers per roll, actually this one is quite good 😀

I didn't start using the sunny16 with the M4-P of course, I started getting used to it way back (my OM-1 and a bunch of expired Ilford XP2 are the guinea pig for that 🙂 )

I also bring a handheld meter, but overtime, I used it less and less, I guess the brain takes over and it allows me to grow confidence (for a change).

Hi, Will.

Very fine set of photos, Will. I had no idea that little Elmar was so good. I'm going to look around for one. BTW, I thought Number Two was lovely.

What film did you use?

Ted

Not that it's a big deal, but the tech-head corner of my brain asks: "your Elmar-M is the new version, right? - not the earlier version?" You seem like the kind of person who gets all the details right, which means you're referring to the new version, but sometimes the -M suffix gets added gratuitously...
