THE MAGIC ROLL RFF CONTEST 2008
One theme! One picture! One prize!
One theme! One picture! One prize!
February theme: RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
and prepare photos for March theme: EYES
************************************************** ************
 Thou shalt abyde by the ten rules of the Magic Roll Contest:
1. One submits only one picture per month. In order to make submission anonymous, one sends us one’s picture to this address:
magic.rffcontest [at] gmail.com
We will store pictures in RFF ("The Magic Roll" account) and link them into this thread.
NB: if one wants to withdraw one’s picture, for any reason, one can ask for deletion.
2. Pictures have to be taken with a RF exclusively, film or digital.
3. The size of the picture should not exceed 800 x 800 max, but should not be smaller than 600 x 400 either. (So 800 x 600 is fine, as well as 600 x 500 etc. but not 400 x 400 or 800 x 1200 etc.) Optional: one can put a link to a HQ picture.
4. One is expected to specify the camera/lens/film used.
5. One can submit one’s picture from the 1st to the 25th of each month.
6. From the 25th to the 30th / 31th of the month, we take a vote on the best picture.
Note that February will be an exception to rules #5 & #6.
7. One votes by giving points to one’s favorite pictures as following - every photo has its vote button - you just press it.
February GALLERY AND VOTING for 2008 Magic Roll Contest
8. The winner carries off a fantastic prize: A MAGIC ROLL OF FILM!!!
9. The winner sets the theme for the contest of the month (x +2), eg. the winner of the January contest chooses the theme for March, the winner of February the one for April and so on.
10. Optional: the winner is expected to post some pictures taken with the magic roll.

I urge you to reconsider on the theme
and have no theme for maximum entries.
MANY gallery posts the past months were worthy of votes,
but were not entered because of the theme was incorrect.
WE need ENTRIES
themes mean nothing without entries.

I cannot understand so much here.
The 'Recreational Activities' theme has been public for about three weeks. It seems fine to me.
All photos are sent via Marc-A. & Nzeeman. I am certain any would be rejected by them if the photo infringes RFF rules.
As for 'theme for maximum entries' it's Marc-A.'s suggested format, and we all discussed it when he was asking for comments on his idea. It's OK for me.
The January theme was 'incorrect'? It was chosen by a talented photographer here and engendered a lot of participation. What was incorrect about a theme of 'Families'?
Magic Roll has had plenty of entries. Sure there's other photos in the Gallery but for one reason or another people didn't put them in the competition. Their decision.
CameraQuest: Since you said that you wanted RFF to be more about imagery some of us have worked very hard to make it happen. Marc-A. has come up with a good idea which has been popular. And now this post from yourself!
I like RFF and many of the people here, but this post hampering one of the better imagery initiatives makes me want to talk about camera bags.

Marc or nzeeman, please edit the January theme to read Family and not Winter. Also, if we continue the current format, please edit the Rules (paragraph 7)
I want to congratulate Michael and wanted to review his portfolio, but nada portfolio, or his user name is not known to me. Great shot

Looking at your original post; have you changed the voting back to Marc-A.'s suggestion? Or is it just an incorrect copy and paste?

Jon,
The Magic roll is indeed a a great image promo idea, and well done.
Unfortunately the number of entries in January was very small in relation to the membership or the number of pics posted to the gallery. One easy way to get more entries is lift the theme requirement. A lot of great pics posted in the gallery last month were the wrong theme for the contest.
Claremont, my post is not about hampering anything, but about looking for a way to more photogs involved in the contest.
Marc A, Neezman, I need feedback from you on this to make changes on the Feb Contest gallery. No theme is up there yet. What do you guys think?

Considering these posts I can see there is misunderstanding here on two levels.
In post #2 CameraQuest says to reconsider the theme. Then I follow up saying the theme of 'Recreational Activities' for February is fine and so on.
I had misunderstood: In post #6 CameraQuest seems to be saying that we never need any theme at all because many photos uploaded to the Gallery during the month will not fit into the theme.
He has misunderstood: The photos for February need not have been uploaded in February. For example, a photo to fit the February theme may have been taken some time ago and perhaps uploaded earlier or not.
CameraQuest also seems to think that there no theme yet for February. There is. The theme of 'Recreational Activities' was selected in early January and is visible in post #1.
Magic Roll is about themes, announced well in advance so we can plan to photograph to order or to search our stock.
Gallery Picks is about recognizing photos uploaded during a time period whatever the subject, and meets CamaraQuest's goal.
Do people agree with my understanding of this thread so far having read both CameraQuest posts?

We have february theme - it is recreational activities. It was Marc and my idea and other members agreed to have theme which is chosen by winner of previous contest. By the way cameraquest i have one question for you Michael Bialecki
winner of january contest sent me an email - he said that he became member here but he cant post, and cant upload images in gallery. he gets message "michaelbialecki, you do not have permission to access this page. This
could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this
page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access
administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your
account, or it may be awaiting activation."
can you help him with this?

Claremont, it is you who misunderstand me.
I simply would like to see a lot more entries and participation in the Magic Roll Contest. To me the easiest, quickest way to get more entries is to have an open theme. The gallery upload reference was simply of an example of many excellent pics which were not entered into the Magic Roll contest, presumably because their theme was not family.
However the Magic Roll is primarily Marc A's and Neezman's idea. If they want to stick to RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, OK.
The Feb gallery changes and link to the February Saloon from the front page will be up by the end of the day.

A couple of points...
1. Michael could, perhaps, create himself a new account & see how he gets on?
2. I am with you Mr Claremont, but perhaps some of the confusion was caused by the original version of Post #1 which has now been edited to show what is expected this month.
Oh alright, three points...
3. Magic Roll, could I ask you not to post in white text please. I use the VBP-Legacy Forum "skin" which presents a white background to the text boxes, so I have to highlight the whole box to see what you have written. Ta.
Ah, and one more...
4. Is it a "bad" idea for the theme for March to be publicised as soon as possible? Some of us don't have much of a back-catalog to search through, so a bit of extra warning could give us a chance to think about March while shooting for February, and on and on and on.
PS. I like the way this site is moving. As long as there is sufficient server space, there's plenty of room for the more image minded to coexist with the so called "gear heads". I dare say alot of you out there have more than one camera and take cracking snaps with all of them so qualify as both.

lZr, I've just done as you recommended, but cannot read the text in posts 9 & 10. Everything other post is in clear B&W except in post #1 where it is intentionally red. Can you see the text in #9 & #10 when using VBP Legacy? P'raps it's me then.

Hello to all,
First I would like to say that this is my first post here, for some reason I was having trouble with my membership and was unable to reply to any posts, so I would like to thank Stephen for doing whatever he did. I would also like to thank all the people that voted for me and left me nice comments. This is the first photo contest that I have ever entered and your comments and votes really meant a lot to me and I just want to say "thank you". I would like the theme for March to be "eyes", basically any photo that has eyes (doesn't have to be human eyes) in it. I hope that this theme will allow a lot of people to participate. I would also like to say that I have been "lurking" in the shadows of rff for quite some time and that I have learned a lot from reading posts here and it has been educational, inspiring, sometimes funny and most of all, fun.
Regards, Michael Bialecki

Stephen,
I understand the desire for more entries and I will (hopefully) be entering this competition. Through personal choice I didn't want to post any photos of my family and I didn't have any others that I deemed would fit into 'family' / were fit at all.
"Recreational Activities" can be interpreted in many different ways and I think more than broad enough for a monthly competition.
Keep up the good work Marc and nzeeman, this will grow as the months go by.
cheers,
kully
PS I'm in the same boat as MickH, giving advance notice of the next months theme is rather handy.

Mick, also I cann't view the text in #9 & #10 posts. If you want to stay with Legacy mode, place your mouse pointer top left side of the text and drag to right and down. You will see bluish text as posted by the source. You can change the font color when posting but not for posts already sent.
Have a big day. I missed 2 rolls of TRIX today. So sorry. My plastic rolls in the jobo container was bad positioned and I ended with 1/2 of the developer. 16 minutes gone forever. The bottom roll is ok, but it is borring.
