The Maniac-Genius - Jim Marshall; His influence on my photography...

Just found this post on a search for Jim Marshall, after the 2017 announcement of the limited edition Jim Marshall Leica Monochrom.

This is a fabulous story, thank you so much for sharing. The thought of being a fledgling photographer meeting a vaunted idol, who then turns out to be warm and encouraging, is superb.

And for the gear fanatic in me: Jim's gear list seems to include:

M4, M6
Leicavit
Super Angulon 21mm
Elmarit 28mm
Summilux 35mm
Summicron 90mm

"20 Leica bodies and 30 Leica lenses" (from the Leica press release about the limited edition camera).

And his technician of choice is Sherry Krauter.

On display at the LA Leica Store 6/15/2017.

Alas, Leica produced only 50 of the Jim Marshall commemorative cameras world wide.

Orders so quickly surpassed production that 150+ orders were booked before Leica could issue the SOLD OUT notice!

How many could Leica have sold world wide?

My guess is 500.

It would be wonderful to see a 2nd commemorative Jim Marshall set -

a black paint film MP with black Leicavit produced in larger numbers!

Great post. And thanks to Archiver for bringing it back to life. I immediately went on Amazon and ordered several of Marshall's books. Fascinating character and excellent photographer.

When I saw the press release announcing this camera I have to say I was disappointed - that brass color is not what I'd have chosen. A Black Paint M4 style body with a matched Leicavit MP - both wearing his signature would be my preference. Package it with a print and a bottle of good whiskey. Maybe a bullet hole thru the warranty card for good measure :)
