If it was on the lens I'd be unhappy...

That's why you need to buy two X100's.
One you'll bang everywhere, and one you'll put in your nuclear protection dome.
Anyway... I'm buying cameras to use them not to try a beautiful little fancy dress on it

Great !
Great !
Back in the 80s I used to get pissed off when my equipment got scuffs and marks from use...
Must be the experience of my own body getting scuffed and marked by time, but now I look upon camera scratches as ritual scars... or proof that I am actually using the tool to take pictures, instead of yet another status symbol...
If I get it and it aint black, I will seriously consider anodizing and black painting both top and bottom magnesium plates:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anodizing#Anodized_magnesium
Or Ill just wait a little more and buy the all-black first "special edition" X100 (people have been clamouring for it all over the web)
Please Fuji, just get the low light AF right...

The best camera is one that still works!
Such a stirrer for a mod!
I don't think a scratch would be an issue for what isn't really a big ticket item ... I'd be more upset if I scratched my M2 because so far it's made it through fifty years and numerous pairs of hands without it happening! The X100 by this stage will have been recycled several times and could be doing duty as a cup holder in the latest Toyota cold fusion hybrid.

I am always relieved with any item gets that first good cosmetic blemish. Then I don't have to wonder when it is going to happen and can enjoy it even more.

I'll simply cover the scratch with a red dot ... then cover the red dot with tape

I wasn't bothered when I got my first scratch and now that my leather is getting wrinkly, don't bother about that either. I was not pretty to start with.
The illustrious camera however.

I bought my current camera with tons of scratches already on it, part of how I got it so cheaply. That said, it was a wunderplastik dslr, it takes great images, but the body isn't winning any design awards. Not sure if I will feel differently about the X100 since I do think it's well designed and nice to look at, but seeing as I like my gear to look old and cheap for when I travel, I probably won't mind the dings so much.

You could always e-mail Fuji, I'm sure they'll let you have a new one, after all your efforts here ...

And if I ever lose my eyes
If my colors all run dry
Yes, if I ever lose my eyes
Oh, if - I won't have to cry no more.

I think the SD card/battery plastic door will be broken BEFORE the first scratch

Reviewers complain about how "flimsy" these are, but they don't break unless you abuse or do something really careless to the camera. You can more easily knock the lens out of true or destroy the LCD than break off those doors. At least in my three years experience of buying and rehabbing/repurposing used and abused digicams.

Do you mean a scratch like this one?
