The MX is one of my favourites. Had a dent on the pentaprism, sticky mirror, and the common meter problems but still delivered. Loved it! One of the first to come and the last to go.

I had a Super ME and thought that was pretty small as SLR go. How does the Olympus OM 1/2/... compare to the MX sizewise?

Nice black MX Huss. They are great cameras.
When I was first getting into photography, I inherited my grandfather's black MX. I still have it and use it every now and then.

Man, that's a thing of beauty. Dad gave me the Pentax ME he bought in the late 70s, and it was the camera with which I learned the very basics of photography as a kid. How to hold a camera, how to frame, focus and shoot. How to wind on and set aperture. It's sitting beside my bed and wants me to go out and shoot with it. If I wasn't so obsessed with gear in general, rangefinders and quieter cameras in particular, the ME would be the only camera I'd need for most film shooting. I always get a thrill when I pick it up.

Beautiful camera and photograph, Nick! I used an MX once with the 50 1.4. Handy little street camera. The shutter on the one I used was quite loud, though.

I started with Pentax many years ago and still have a soft spot for them.I still own a pristine Mx, sadly the Lx is long gone. Incidentally kept my m series glass, smc m 28, 40, 50 , 135, 75-150 and my 80-200, great glass. I otice you have the 40/2.8, l always got great reults from mine shot at 5.6, enjoy your Mx, its a gem

but it comes with a story, a bit of history:
I had bought it together with a bunch of lenses in central Vietnam 2011. On it's scratched bottom plate there seemed to be an engraved name. I took it's photo and viewing it large I was able to make it out: Mr. Garret Culhane from Acampo, Carlifornia
I googled him, had found two photo sites of someone of the same name, contacted that person and really, this was him! He answered and confirmed that it had been his camera! ( Unfortunately, by now, 8 years later, these 2 photosites are gone. )
He had told me that he used to publish photos taken with it in travel magazines and that the photos seen on his site that had been taken in Africa and Nicarague had been taken with this very Pentax MX. He had received it for a Christmas present from his parents 1979. Surprising was, though on his sites there had been photos taken in Vietnam he told me that he had never taken his MX there. Some 10 years earlier he had given it to charity in the US!

Ok peeps. I have no idea... what is an excellent small 24 or 28mm lens for the MX?

The SMC Pentax-M 28/2.8 is small and is a decent lens.
The SMC Pentax 28/3.5 is larger and slower, but is maybe a bit better optically.
The SMC Pentax 24/2.8 is a very good 24mm

It's certainly a pretty camera, nicely made, and I cannot fault Pentax K mount lenses. I have found the LED meter on the MX to be hard to use, and in fact the finder is not particularly friendly to the eye IMO.
With Pentax lenses, I prefer the K1000. It is bulkier, but fairly light, and its meter is simple, reliable, and accurate. For a small SLR body, I prefer the OM-1 (and its mechanically shuttered variants). The OM-1 finder is notably brighter and the eye relief is superior. Olympus lenses do not stand the test of time however compared to anything made by Asahi Optical in my experience. The OM lens auto iris mechanisms tend to fail and they are prone to fungus. Of course most OM lenses can be repaired. The MX is a relative bargain however - at least for now!

Thanks Colton, I’ll check those out.
I agree this is not a perfect camera, the eye relief is so shallow that I would not be able
to see the sides of the vf if I was wearing glasses.
But it is a very nice camera...

Between the OM-1 and the MX, the MX is smaller
Having had both, they both are amazing cameras but i kept the Olympus.
