the perils of owning too many cameras

I started to type this into my previous thread about trading an M3 for an M6, but decided it would be better on its own....

believe it or not, I'm trying to simplify my camera collection.. I'd like to have just two camera bodies in each film size.. as it is now, I have about nine 35mm cameras, and it takes me forever to finish off a roll of film in any one of them because I like to use them all equally as much

my family used to laugh at my dad in earlier decades because he'd have a single roll of film in a camera for years.. he'd take just a couple shots at 'important events' such as holidays or birthdays.. when he finally collected 36 photos, he'd get the film developed and the results would be images spanning at least 3 years.. it was funny because you'd see the same people having several different birthday parties.. several Christmas family portraits.. all on the same roll of film

I often feel like I'm the same way, even tho I have a couple rolls of film developed each week.. but each camera might only get used for a half dozen shots in a month due to spreading out the use among so many

then there's the confusion of remembering what camera has what type of film in it.. one would have b&w, another Ektachrome, another Fuji NPS.. I usually put a piece of masking tape on the bottom plate and write the film type, but sometimes I forget.. try to remember that 4 months later and only 6 shots into the roll

my role model seems to Henry David Thoreau these days.. "Simplify, simplify, simplify."

just don't ask which cameras I'd give up.. that's like Sophie's choice.

simple, keep the ones that have the good pictures in them and toss the rest.

A simple solution is to bulk load your own film. I do this and load rolls of 12 or 15 frames. This way I never have film sitting in camera waiting to be finished.

pure genius.. now, if only there were cameras that had a screen on the back to view them in the camera.. why has no one ever thought of this?

I'm thinking of simplifying as well... but some cameras have a sentimental value.. I think I'd keep my Kiev-2A, my Pentacon Six, my Holga and my Flexaret-IIIa TLR.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my 35mm praktica PLC-2 slr and its two lenses, and i've got to repair two Flexaret TLRs, before eventually selling them as well. That way i'll never get a brand new ZI or Leica. hmm 😉 🙁

Stay tuned folks, I might sell my Zorki-S one of these days 😉

That's silly Brett, just open the back and look!

Keep the nine 35mm cameras, Brett. Just don't buy any more. Or keep eight, and send the Contax T over here. 😉

Todd, that's idiotic.. if you do that, you'll only see the shot you're about to take

good point, turn around and point the camera towards the last shot first.

What happens to me is, whenever I simplify my equipment (okay, let's say collection), they don't get pared down but rather 'combined." Like an M3 and a Bessa R became an M6, etc. If you're not hurting for cash, try to think of it this way, then you don't regret selling stuff you like using (why else would we have them?).

Think of it as an "upgrade." 😉

I hope somebody is collecting a list of "Silliest Comments On RFF".. I'd hate to see these (and many others) lost in cyberspace forever

(and no, I wasn't referring to ray's last comment)

Silliest? I thought this was our chance to break into Vaudeville Brett, ya know..."Who's on First"?

Bret, shame on you! How can you - in good conscience - perpetrate the age-old MYTH that one can have too many cameras?

There simply is no such thing possible!! 😀 😉

Hey Brett, if you stopped worrying about the number of cameras you have got, you would have more time to take photos. If you are taking more photos, the film won't stay in the camera so long and then you would need all of them. Problem solved. 😀
