The Problem with Modern Photographers -- And Your Problem Probably Too (I'm Guessing)

Not bad advice for the 99% of people who aren't geeky enough to be hanging around on photography forums.

But...they won't see this! ;)

Mmmmmm. Lagavulin. I remember the first time I cracked an Islay and the entire room smelled like a smokey campsite. What a joy. Lol. I did enjoy your essay BTW, was just pointing out that us casual photogs do things for the joy of doing them.

A great one. I'm a Laphroaig guy. Laphroaig 10, specifically, only because in my parts -- PA, we still have archaic "state stores". However, for whatever reason (probably because PA is a big buyer) that particular Islay can be had for a little less than the two big Glens (three if you count the overrated [imo] 'Moragne). That I I really like it even over more expensive drams I've had occession to try.

Hey Nick!
I've read the whole damn thing.
I still don't know how am i supposed to shoot to become the new Ansel Bresson. How about some real advice?

And laphroaig 18 is better by miles.
Discontinued?! What are we, animals?!

Too rich for my blood (and wallet). 10'll do me. (Literally and figuratively). Actually the Mrs. will "slightly" give me a little guff over the cost of the stuff. But I advise her that that 5th of Laphroaig will last me 6 mos. (It's to be revered not glugged down like Keystone Ice) How many bottles of wine will she have in that time? Do the math.

I win that argument. Even though I don't. Cause it's with the wife.

I found out when my parents sent me to Catholic school when I was about six or seven. Unlike public schools where we brought our own crayons to school and they had paper labels on them, this class had thick communal unlabeled crayons which we all shared. I colored my skies purple and my grass brown and the nuns thought I was a discipline problem until it was discovered I was color-blind by the school nurse. (FYI, I *was* a discipline problem also)

When I was in the Marine Corps, I happened to be walking through the mall one day and saw a table full of marked-down jeans at The Gap in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA. That was in the 80s when colored jeans were fashionable. I didn't want colored jeans though, just blue ones. I found a stack of them at $6 each and bought 4 pair of them. They were indeed purple and not blue, as I was laughingly informed back at the barracks.

Yes. Product of a catholic grade school too. And HS. They graduate heathen atheists donchya know. And, yes, those el cheapo unlabled off-brand crayons did pose some problems.

Glad to see I wasn't the only person who unwittingly sported purple garb a time or three. If I saw you wearing those purple jeans I would have never known they were purple and probably have asked where you got them for such a great discount.

Nick,
I'm always a little annoyed by people who have never met me, spoken to me nor know anything about me, and yet are willing to dispense advice with the greatest of authority on what my "problems" are. I shoot what I shoot, with what I shoot, and how I shoot because it pleases me to do so, and seem to be getting along just fine.
Robert

One fancy digital leica or twenty bottles of laphroaig 18, Nick.
How long will 20 bottles last?!

Now that i do the math it shocks me.

Glad to hear you're getting on just fine. Good t' know.

Didn’t Winogrand make a good amount of his own prints? If so, would that qualify as shooting like HCB and printing somewhat like AA? Maybe he wasn’t putting quite the same amount of time into the prints but with the amount of contacts alone that he had to make, that’s a good chunk of time.

I shoot like Raid Amin. I really enjoy doing what I like to do the way I want to do things.

On the Enchroma site I am Strong Protan. I tried the glasses and cried because they did nothing significant. Hundreds of dollars they cost. Good sunglasses however.

Overall I know not to tweak the Saturation slider much. Often I desaturate.

I seem to like B&W photos from other people more than their color photos.

I often cull my photos as a separate project.
