"The Rattler' ... the photographic story of a steam train.

"The Rattler' is a heritage listed steam train that travels from the country town of Gympie (pop 12000) to the small haven of Imbil (pop 300) twice a week ... Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The train meanders along a scenic route through the picturesque Mary Valley in South East Queensland and makes a few stops along the way before spending an hour or so at Imbil, where passengers alight and wander around the tiny timber town before embarking on the return journey to Gympie.

I was lucky enough to be at Imbil a week or so ago to photograph the arrival of 'The Rattler' and also photograph some of the people who travel on her purely for the unique experience that steam travel offers.

For those intersted the camera was an F6 with 24-120 f4 G Nikkor and the film was Plus-X

I looked at your offerings for a good while and came to the conclusion that they are all excellent- the train itself, the people, close-ups of the train wheels and the view of the trestle. A story very well told and great work with the Plus-X and F6 and Nikkor lens.

Thanks very much for the positives! For me this is what photography is all about ... being able to tell a story through a series of images.

At some stage I'd quite like to book a ride on The Rattler and photograph the entire experience from within ... as an observer and passenger.

Thank you ... and isn't that the truth about Plus-X, very sad to see such an enigmatic emulsion bite the dust. I have five rolls left in the freezer and to be honest the only other film I can think of that gives tones like this ... just doesn't exist!

Lovely set, Keith! I'm old enough to remember riding on a Pullman sleeper pulled by what was to me a HUGE steam engine, when we moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois after Dad got home from WWII.

Just as a matter of interest, Keith, do you know what gauge the tracks are? In this country with its bizarre mixture of railway gauges we are in the process of making main interstate lines standard gauge, slowly and at great expense and inconvenience. I live in Victoria, the worst offender: we share our 5ft3inch gauge with only Ireland and Spain.
