This is quite interesting - there is always the question of why make the photo if you don’t share your work, and today we want the audience to the world.
I don’t know the answer. I hate insta… format and interface, and face… - reading an article in the FT this weekend on their young, African content moderators and the treatment they receive didn’t make me any keener.
I never really got into Flickr - maybe I should try again - but I always liked here. Although, even here gallery activity seems to have declined a bit - do we still have gallery selects of the week? I haven’t seen it recently.
Somehow, I think here is more like a bunch of people that share a passion and can at least talk around their work. A bit of that non-virtually would be good!

Flickr was, up until its facelift a few years ago, hands down the best site for posting and sharing photos (from a photographer's point of view). After the facelift it's worse, but it is still world's better than insta ever was. The new owners of Flickr seem pretty clueless, they want good things, but aren't really engaged with the community, except by way of a few long-time "influencers" on the site. They don't really use the site, and the CEO is pretty disengaged - I had some words with him a while back, and he had metrics and number etc. to show me how good the site was and how it's improving, but didn't seem to have much (any?) experience actually using the site, and certainly didn't want ideas for improvements. Admittedly, the fact that he even responded at all shows at least a minimum amount of interest in the user base. I'd be surprised if the average user on insta could get as much time out of Adam Mosseri.

Probably about 80% of my shots I take for other people and are all equestrian related.
That audience is on FB so I mainly post there either ,on the main site or the related pages.
Any more personal shots I often as not don`t post at all or if do it`s here or Insta / Flickr.
I`ve never considered any of them as storage sites as Ko Fe suggests .
Don`t know why .... never really occurred to me to do so.

Last year, Instagram killed the ability to search hashtags by recent posts and that pretty much ended the functionality of hashtags for getting your work discovered. So if you weren't already popular, you're screwed.

Seriously it died a while ago. If you hadn’t reached a high level of followers, your images just didn’t get seen. It locked in the status of entrenched accounts, making growth impossible.
I’ve been on Bluesky a while, though it’s only about 3 million users so far. Tough to tell whether it will grow faster.

I use Insta because it is the least bad option out there in my opinion.

The ads suck (especially the proliferation of far right religious and fascist political ones) and may force me to nuke it in the end but its free and it functions.
Those two facts suffice for the short term.

It must be January at work. Truly, we are excelling ourselves at postings this month.
A thousand thousand "yesses" to this - it sums up my sentiments to (almost) perfection...
PS I say (almost) nothing is ever perfectly perfect... tho' some posts on RFF come close to this ultimate.
Wishy washy Buddhist that I am, my attitude to most social web sites are that I basically don't give a sweet sheep dip, in one way or any way or the other. y personal oMpinion of Instagram is such that I would have to write it on Alfoil.
RFF Gallery needs a new epiphany, I reckon. It never really was what it could have been, and it could be so much more than it is - if only we, the members, take the responsibility and put in the effort. Starting with letting The Powers That Be know what we expect and want from it.

Yes, that's true. However, I think a thin slice of the internet photography world is about all I can handle.
Just speaking for myself, too much is really too much. I think less time looking at other peoples pictures and more time taking pictures is what's best for me.
I actually get more inspiration from visiting art galleries and museums. Painters inspire me more than photographers. Painters see things as they want to see them. The amount of creativity that goes into a good painting is (in my opinion) everything that a photographer needs to know to be successful.
Alas, I blather on about things that probably interest nobody. Either way, I believe that less of the internet is better for creativity. They used to say, turn off your TV and go outside for a walk... it'll do you good.

I live "outside" the "net"... the only place is rff... I had an account in Flickr but I don't use it, same for Facebook and Instagram... maybe I'm wrong, but I don't have time for it.

Anyone use Substack for posting photos? It has a nice clean blog/microblog style, I took notice when Jeffery Saddoris (podcaster) started using it. I haven't tried using it to display photos yet, but I might.

I have personal (political) reasons for avoiding substack so as a result I won't go into it here but I don't consider it acceptable for anything.

I don't care about the hullaballoo, at all. A platform choosing to err in the direction of freer speech, even if it attracts toxicity and hatemongering, still seems more in line with my beliefs about free speech. Unless, of course, it becomes a go-to platform for those kinds of people, in which case it will starve and turn into an echo chamber of hate... but it stands to get closer to that if decent people boycott it.

Guys… there are something like 2.9 Billions instagram accounts. It’s basically a whole world. You like Cake? You can follow 1Mil accounts in relation to cakes.

The beautiful thing about instagram is that you can tailor it to fit yourself. Abd then you get this nice feed thay fits you like a mirror: all carrots if you’re into carrots.
No need to hate it just because you (and me) go unnoticed.
That would be like hating the world because you get unnoticed on the street… nobody cares. Especially our street photography, there’s nothing in that niche. A bit of ego stroking, nothing important.

That's true. I don't think I'd want fame and notoriety as a street photographer, there are different ethical questions the bigger you get as a street photographer in my opinion.

Don't kid yourself into believing it's about "free speech". They have rules about what they don't allow on the site. They know what audiences they want and are perfectly willing to shut out audiences they don't want, and they do. But I digress.
This doesn't mean much when the site is still one of the ugliest, worst designed out there. I prefer not to waste my time patronizing spaces that are intentionally awful.

True... but it's also a platform where all of the cliches seem to do the best, because also there are 2.9 million people.
Some of us do not hate it. However, this thread is about if it has changed or not. Many people complain that it has, even people with a lot of followers. I think it has, even in my small world.
Well, the street doesn't know my interests or have hashtags to direct like-minded people to my interests.
Well, certain street photographers do really well on Instagram. It is important to some people. I don't think anything that makes people happy is something to dismiss.
