The Rumor Mill – Two Special Edition M8.2s Comming

For some reason or other I'm now thinking that the Special Edition M8 is going to be akin to "Bubbles De Verre"...

Isn't the M8 'supposed' to be an upgrabeable system that one can have and hold for years to come with new upgraded whirly gigs and such? I mean, if they charge about the same for the special editions as the M8.2 they might find an audience. I remember at the last Tamarkin auction they had the first production M8 up on the block, so maybe their is some sort of bizzarro land collectibility for digitial cameras.
 
I think that the previous Leica CEO, who predicted FF sensor upgrades to existing M8s, was fired. Or maybe it was just FF M8s in the near future.
 
I would buy one if they put in something functional like a .91x or higher finder. Collector edition digital camera = oxymoron?
 
well they have to come up with collector editions because collectors are a big part of their clientele. when you are not attracting any new customers, you have to sell multiples to the same people.
 
I don't think there's much difference between making a film camera look like an overblown accessory to excess itself ... or a digital for that matter ... it sucks either way from where I stand.

I'm no fan of these limited edition a la carte wonders from any manufacturer in case you hadn't guessed! :p

Absolutely, I'm also a user and if the new version/edition doesn't help usability it sucks - but what am I lamenting about - I only buy used anyway, so there'll never be a special edition going into my bag :cool:.

Well, yes, exactly. Why do some people who on their own admission will never buy something -- be it a new Leica, a new Rolls Royce or made-to-measure Lobb shoes -- feel such a need to attack it? You're honest enough to admit it; many aren't.

I can't imagine buying a 'commemorative' Leica either; but if someone else wants to, and by doing so, helps keep Leica in business, why would any sane person complain? I mean, it's not like they're covered in human skin or something. It's a piece of jewellery, and I don't buy jewellery either, but that doesn't mean I want Garrard out of business.

Hi Roger,

obviously for users/shooters who actually take pictures with their gear it seems hard to understand that a tool is not used for its purpose. It's a waste of function - not starting a debate on waste of money. This is clearly not an argument for buyers of special editions.
I don't want to go into details but Vogel boots (NYC) aren't that bad either....:cool:

Sure. We can regard it as a waste of money. But on the scale of wastes, I still think that a commemorative Leica is a less wasteful and more rational purchase than a pair of designer trainers or a $100 hairdo once a month (my wife, fortunately, agrees with me on the latter).

Besides, people are entitled to waste their own money. We even elect people to help us...

Heh...not to mention those who keep up with the digital replacements every six months or so...like the D3X at $8k...I gave up on that long ago and buy my digital gear used. I guess I am taking obsolete photos but I like them!:D
 
Hey, I remember when people used to drive their older Ferraris. Now, they're worth enough to retire on so they're usually parked forever. As previously said, it's "your" money. If you want to use an M8 for target practice, taking pictures or just collecting dust, that's your perogative (sp). Why criticize someone for collecting. It's an exercise in freedom and human rights. Be happy for those that can afford these jewels and keep Leica afloat in times like these.

It seems like Michael Richemann of LL is once again up in arms against a camera company and this time its Nikon.

Aren't you guys tired of these photo-pundits, I mean during film days there were no Rockwells or Richamanns or Thoms... The digital age also brought its own talking heads.

Also in the film days there were photo-pundits.... admittedly they couldn't reach that many reader as nowadays on a widely-used and easily accessible medium called "world-wide-web".
