Certainly that used to be true but in these days of conceptual art and where anything can be art, it can be a toss up as to whether the sanitation workers pick up that pile of garbage before the gallery workers move it inside as an installation, or not.
Really, my daughter's messy bed is just as good as that one in the gallery that was previously mentioned in this thread, but since she does not have an art degree, so it's simply a mess and not a masterpiece worth tens of thousands of $.

Sounds like Dektol Dan is interviewing for a job... or trying to justify something to himself.
The only justification that any artist has to make is whether or not it is necessary to communicate his expression in a way that validates where he has come from, and honors that, that his expression does something that validates and honors his neighbors and fellow human beings, and finally that his expression leaves something of value for those who follow him.
That, Mr. JFretless, is the job I am applying for. Will you hire me?
These kinds of discussions which involves the untrained who need to justify themselves in a post dada world usually decay into lame discussions as to what art is. This thread has done just that. I am more interested in art's purpose.
Mr. JFretless, if it appears that I am constantly searching to justify the value of my work, you are very correct. I would hope that you would be meet my standards for yourself.
Training provides the artist with more tools and a greater facility in the many languages of art. It also raises the bar for the standards by which one is judged.
I very much doubt many folks in this forum have actually met a real practicing artist although their are many here who believe that they are artists themselves for reasons that satisfy only themselves.
I suppose that is good enough for anyone to get started at art, but it may not be an end in itself.
