The Sigma Foveon M : Please Share your Monochrom Images

Ah yes. Family negotiations over food. This is from my first week with the DP2m in 2013.

I use my DP2M set for B&W, and I am astounded by the quality images it produces.
Here in Australia it is advertised new on sale for USD 400. I would like to get a DP3M, (75mm FL equivalent) but that is not available any more. Interestingly Canon recently tries to buy Sigma, but that offer was rejected by Sigma. This little gem of a camera beats my M 240 and its ridiculously expensive lenses in my opinion in B&W.
 
They were students out enjoying themselves, and they asked me to take a group picture of them with a cell phone. When they did the three monkeys routine a few minutes later, I grabbed a quick shot with my camera.

That's a few hundred less than what they cost in the US now.

That's also the proper way to shoot B&W on this camera.

Digital Lloyd, or whoever he is, also prefers it to the Monochrom, but the Monochrom is just another bayer camera. Only saw one good photo from the Monocrhom, ever.

Sigma Pro Photo is not the sharpest stick in the quiver. But if you shoot RAW, it's best to use it to get the best BW conversions.

Shooting JPGs in High mode still gives a 6+mb file, and LR handles this fine. I can't speak for others, but most of my stuff here is BW jpg, and it is still very high resolution--silly high, breathtakingly high. It is possible to shot the DP on the street and get good results.

Dan -- not sure if you mean the X3F raw files from a Merrill generally.

Assuming the latter, to process the X3F file Sigma has its own software (called SPP). It has a reputation for being at best idiosyncratic (and at worst user-hostile!). On the upside, it has the capacity to deal with monochrome images very well (I think because of the unique 3-layer sensor and the interpretation of the data).

There are also other well regarded raw development software (e.g. iridient developer).

Part of the hassle with using Sigma's SPP software is that it is 'unfamiliar' compared to Lightroom etc. But many think the hassle is worth it.....
 
To add a lil bit more to the KISS approach: expose for highlights, get a good image.
The DP exposure warning option will Wave the Red Banner on highlights likely to blow out.
Treat the DP as a TMax (or Ektar/Portra) camera--ISO 100-400--and you won't have unrealistic expectations (though elsewhere in these threads and the all knowing net are tutorials for getting the most out of RAW, out of high ISO, etc.)
