Nuts.
(joe, feel free to start laughing at me any time)
So, I have been happily using my motley collection of old, cheap and fun RF cameras for a while now. And a pretty good selection of LTM lenses. Flirted very briefly with the thought of a Contax but decided that I was happy with the FSU gear. Had a Bessa R and ultimately passed it along(though I did keep the CV 21mm lens).
Life is good.
But the Bessa R4 is announced. And it occurs to me that the Leica M3 would be an almost perfect companion.
Oh, bother.
The Slope has turned vertical and I seem to have a lead parachute...
I know all the rational reasons for (and against) sticking with what I have now--in fact, I've made some of those points in other discussions.
What it comes down to, I guess, is how much this "itch" is going to bother me.
At least half of my enjoyment comes from the gear I use--I really do like elegant mechanical things--so if I move in this direction that part of my hobby will be enhanced.
The other thing going through my mind is that, since I do have the mechanical elegance fetish, it probably will bother me at least a little using ltm lenses on an M mount camera. Which means my lens choices will dwindle. Which might actually make my photos better🙄 OK, that line of "reasoning" is BS rationalization for sure.
Nuts.

Rob,

you're talking to friends who can't provide you any 'friction' to slow you down on the slippery slope.

all we can do is put up a big net at the bottom of the slope and hand you a beer 😉

Yeah, we're more likely to act as lubrication in this regard!

Rob, just say no.

All kidding aside, why not just use your existing LTM lenses with adapters? If you like the lenses, keep using them.

I am still sliding towards Tom, who is waiting beer in hand (right!) 🙂

Roland.

hehehe ... who said I was at the bottom already 😀 [hair still blowing wildly in the wind]

Actually I think the R4 would make a very good combo with the M3. Life is short, live with no regrets 😉

Ha... before reading Tom's reply I was going to say "Life is too short to not own an M."

I shoot with M3's now, and can't wait to add an R4 body to the mix. I sold my M6 and an M4p a while ago, and haven't looked back, but a real wide angle body (besides the Bessa L) would be great. Especially if Mr.K. introduces a coupled 25mm with it...

Rob... I'm trying to rationalize a purchase here! 🙄 ... and these threads really undermine my resolve. This ain't fair! 😱 What to do? Do I go with a Summilux 35 (fast) or an Elmarit 21 (wide)?

Nuts... I'm falling too, and I can't stop either...

I have always liked Leicas and thought, in sort of an abstract way, that they are amazing cameras. But this looks (just barely) "do-able" for me. Which, I think, is why it's bothering me.
M6,7, or 8 are so clearly beyond my reach that I can admire them from afar as it were, and not really give them a second thought beyond the idle and silly, "If I win the lottery..." kind of thing. But the M3 is much closer and seems to match my thinking about my kit very precisely, indeed.
And the M3 wouldn't have really come up but for the Bessa R4; "Gee, no external finders for my wide lenses...Nice but then I'd still need 'em for the longer lenses...Wait a minute, that M3 would cover the longer end..."
If my schedule at work was just a little more consistent, I could find a part time job...the new Walgreen's will need some one to run their mini-lab...
Nuts.
