If she's a keen cook, it's a legitimate response. Otherwise, it would work better as 'the same reason we have more than one saucepan...'.
Then again, I never cease to be surprised at the hostility between the sexes that is so often taken for granted on this forum -- or the peculiar fixation with shoes. Are there really so many brainless ninnies who define themselves in terms of shoes? How could anyone stand to be married to such a person? Surely, the shoe anecdotes spring from a desire to conform to a cultural stereotype which says, "I am a MAN, and I can afford to run a bimbo whose horizons are limited to shoes" -- even when the woman in question isn't a bimbo.
Frances has four sewing machines. And? Sewing is one of her hobbies. We own several pistols, both firearms and airguns: we both enjoy shooting. To be sure, it is idiocy to spend money you don't have on things you can't afford, without any prospect of making money from those things, but if you can afford something and it gives you pleasure, why not buy it? Of course, you may have ask yourself whether you will really enjoy it once you have, or whether you are looking at a simple flash of acquisitiveness.
Cheers,
R.
