It's nice to know that this lens can bring back Kodachrome 10 color to modern film. I just dropped off my first test roll with my new Summar. I'm hoping for the same results.

I just picked up a Summar on a Leica IIIa. There is an M Mount version?

There should be no reason why the normal LTM - M adapter can't work for the Summar, as seen in the attractive photographs above. The infinity-lock should not be a problem with the better quality adapters anyway - but it is decades since I had a Summar so am only speaking from memory. The OP was using an M5, so obviously at least some brands of adapter work fine.

Wow, Summar next hype lens? I'll keep hold of mine then. I might even try it with the roll of Sensia I have knocking around in my drawer at home...

Your pictures have a real 3 dimensional quality. I especially like the chalk artist and the outside cafe. Pretty sure I am going to have to get one of these. Thanks for posting.

I love my Summar. I had one that got stolen and I bought a replacement one. It is prone to flare, but with a lens hood and with selective framing, the Summar can be an excellent lens.

Mauro: Great shots, I really like second one down....reminds me of old times in Europe - lovely and I can taste the pastries still 
There was no M version made of this lens, it was discontinued/replaced by the Summitar in 1939
The Summar has been a "hype" lens for quite a while now........listed as a "dog" for years, the Leica "glow" that`s been connected with this lens is finally being appreciated by "true" photographers - (people blackballed the Summarit as well for years and years and now it`s a "cult" lens)
Good examples of the Summar are very hard to find, as well as late issues (1939) ones, uncoated as they were originally are the way you want them, some of the prewar versions were postwar coated by the factory or by private services, be prepared to find lot`s of overpriced junk, while many of the lenses are very worn out and have bad marks/fog etc. etc. on the front elements and inside, pristine lenses command a premium, but they are still atainable for under $200 - should always use the factory hood with it as well to avoid flaring- add $75/$100 for that.....
Early "black nose" versions are collectable and the rigid and tropical versions very rare collectors items running in the $$$$$ thousands of dollars.....
An overall "great" shooting lens that`s sure to share the late 1930`s early 40`s "Kodachrome" look in real modern films

How can I tell whether my Summar is coated or not? Is there a blueish tint when looking at the front of the lens?

Yes a bluish/purple hue, that`s it, many returning GI`s had their lenses coated by Leitz or German photoshops who advertised the servce, if it`s crystal clear, you know what that is
Good clean Summar`s are HARD to find, I had a mint minus one (1937) that was a leftover lens mounted on one of the 1945 Half Race IIIC`s I bought from Hawaii
(was ex- US Army German bringback) and I made a really good deal for the fella who bought it, I don`t suppose I`ll get another one so good anytime soon........it`s one of the few early Leitz lenses I still want/need
But if anyone had one made after the serial number #491xxx to #500xxx+ (1939) and for sale under $200
let me know please

Raid- you'll KNOW if it is coated. An uncoated lens reflects almost 5% of the light hitting it. You'll think it was a mirror compared to the coated lenses. The 1935 5cm f1.5 CZJ Sonnar that I bought has a coated front element. You can tell the difference between it and the inner and rear elements.

Great lens - my only Leica lens (apart from the "Leica" on my Panasonic digicam). Has the most 3D "pop" of any 35mm lens I own. Low contrast, great for people, and has a certain sweetness or dreaminess to many of the images it takes (see raid's daughter's beautiful picture). I might not always be able to identify which lens I used to take what picture, but I can pick out the Summar 100% of the time. Images really wash out wide open on my sample. A bit unpredictable and softer than modern lenses but not "soft".

Nice Mauro, I really like the street artist image. It really has the Summar look.
Luckily, inertia has kept this one priced cheap. Most call it a lens cap. I have 3, and the one I paid for is a pristine uncoated one from 1938. 80 bucks.
It's my most used lens, mostly Delta 100, but I did use color once. Not the sharpest thing in the world but I like it.

I Wow. . . That "Leica Glow" I hear about it and see it on many images taken with Summars. If a Canon lens does that, it's called veiled flare - but when a Leitz lens does it - we call it "glow." Hilarious. . .
