The Sunny 16 and Me - Not the best marriage.

With 400 speed film, I find these reference points useful:

direct sunlight: 1/500 @ f16 - but I always open up a stop from that as slight overexposure with neg film doesn't hurt and you get a bit more shadow detail
hazy day: 1/500 @ f8
open shade, or normal cloudy day: 1/500 @ f5.6
institutional/office flourescent light: 1/60 @f4
subject lit by window light: 1/60 @ f4
home interior lighting at night: 1/30 @f2
 
I always guess the exposure before metering . I now find that I am good at estimating the required exposure.
