this time has come, if cocteau's word "film" is construed to include digital photography. i think he would agree that digital is included.

And if the cost of an M9, M240, etc., is not included . . .

I wish that he had clearly defined "art" along with making that statement.

small digitals are cheap, whether phone or separate; posting on the 'net is essentially free ...

Real Men Shoot Film.
Digital was the camera manufacturer's excuse to triple and quadruple camera prices. It did NOT make photography cheaper. I spend $600 a year on film. My Canon 5DmkII digital camera cost $3000. More than 5 years of film use, and the camera is not built to last much longer. Cheap point-n-shoots are irrelevant. The image quality of them is uniformly horrid for any kind of critical work.
A piece of high-end drawing paper can be bought for $5 and a top quality artist's pencil is $1.

I have realized that digital was about convenience, never price. I do giggle when someone says they are dropping film and going digital because film is too expensive. In two years, the new camera they bought for $2K will be replace by another and they will have to buy that too.
Plus, you are expected to learn movie making now too. "Photographers" are including video with wedding and engagement shoots.
I helped with a local art show this past summer. One of the top winners was a sketch made on a sheet of computer paper with a #2 pencil. The girl did it while watching TV one night. It was also sold to a collector.
I should never have put down the pencils and paper.
