The ultimate Poll: Digital and/or Film?

Just like Steve M., I shoot all film (Tri-X) and just use a little 4MP digi for pix of cameras. I, too, shoot almost as much MF (Rollei) as 35 (M3).

1. Film .... at least 80% of images taken
2. Digital ... at least 80% of images taken
3. Pretty much a healthy mix of digital and film

100% of my privat photos are at film.

100% film, but I used to 100% digital, sold off my digital equipment in 2007. At the moment there is nothing interesting (affordable) to make me try digital again... (interesting to me, that is)

I am about to start for the first time to use a 4/3 micro system. I bought an Olympus EP-2 with EVF and Leica adapter. I will try this out for a while. It makes lots of sense when you have little children and you want many photos for email to the extended family.

I have the Minolta-Leica LTM adapter, which will allow me to use the W-Rokkor 21mm 4.0 on the EP-2. Same applies to the Canon 19mm 3.5 FL which may be used with an adapter. I need to check this out, though.

Anyways, this is a huge [digital] step for me.

My aim is a rough 50:50 split. There are some things that are just done better with a DSLR. For everything else, film and mostly (but not exclusively) RFs.

The question should be, between digital and film what is the keeper ratio? A person my shoot 80% digi and say shoot 1500 images a month. Of those 1500 what is the keeper ratio? That same person may have only shot 200 film images during the same time period. Again what is the keeper ratio? I am willing to bet the keeper ration is MUCH better with film.

The poll is about usage preferences and not about quality of images or about keepers. I am interested in trends at RFF. So far, a small minority is using 100% digital.

2011 If X100 pans out .. a mix of both...maybe.

My poll response was a little dependant on how good the new X100 may or may not be.

I must admit though, the longer I'm a photographer the more use I seem to find for digital.

I mean...what kind of results are you expecting? The reason the community here is so strong is because nearly everyone here shoots film, or has some sort of respect for it. If you asked this question to a random sampling of people (or even a random sampling of people who call themselves photographers) you're going to get a very different response.

To me it represents the difference between doing something you love (shooting film) and getting paid work which for me, seems to have to be mainly digital.

I would love a much better scanner some day, because it would allow me keep a better balance between the two and still provide income hopefully!

It depends what you are targeting with such a poll.
I see 40/110 members use a "healthy mix" of film and digital. This is not a small proportion. After such a thread runs for a month, you get a very good picture of the overall situation at RFF. My target population is the pool of RFF members and not a general population from which to sample from.

I have the Epson 3170, for which I may get the improved negative holder from betterscanning. It should do the job for web posting of images.

In use, my preference is film.
How can any digital doohickey replace the experience?

I shoot film on a canon 7, Kiev 4am, or Pentax MX and digital on a Pentax K10. right now more film than digital. 75/25.

Went with healthy mix as I try to make a point of using as many of the different camera's I own on a regular basis. Example now that I seem to be having issue with the film advance/film jamming on M6 and don't have the funds, due to a major reduction of hours at work, to get it checked/repaired it looks like I'll be using the Fuji GS645W for my film street/candid shooting for a while.
