I second Allen's like on the image of the nun and the distant carnival rides over the buildings. The pole divides her from that world from our perspective, and the buildings block her view, but she must be able to hear it. Funny thing is it's above her, like heaven, and who knows but heaven may have parachute rides. It certainly has oblivion, as you note.
In general this is a very steady, detached, layered approach to enviro- portrayal. Characters moving (strutting and fretting and limping) across stage, but near the back. Even the prostitute 's Come hither is distant and so emotionally reduced.
