I recently posted a (very brief) discussion with accompanying images taken with the Nokton 40/1.4.
No, this is not a review, but I thought it may be useful to some.

Nice discussion, thanks for posting. This lens has long tempted me, but I've got the Rokkor 40/2 which is a gem in its own right. I like your blog. Welcome to RFF!

What you said about the 40 fitting in between 35 and 50 struck a nerve with me. I have the CV 40 and confess that it has saved me a considerable amount of money. When I want a 50mm lens, my mind always come back to the 40. I have succumbed to some FSU 50s but they're so cheap, who cares? Now that 35 f1.2 I bought a few months ago is a different story.

Thanks for sharing, Peter. Very well written and you've managed to capture objective as well as subjective aspects of this lens in an engaging way. Oh and nice photos

Nicely said!
I'd add -when compared to fast 35's- being its focal length a bit longer, it's capable of great selective focus without having the sometimes too narrow 50s' angle of view.
Cheers,
Juan

Fyi - the link to see photos at the end of that blog post is dead.
Thank you so much... don't know why it wasn't working, but it's corrected now.

Thanks for sharing peter, looks like a fantastic little lens.
on your m2 do you just tape off the framelines or use the 35mm lines to compose with a mental adjustment?

Thanks Kosta,
I use the 50mm frame lines that are automatically mechanically triggered. In that way, I have extra cropping room, if need be.

About the contrast of this lens, I am thinking of getting it, but is the contrast a bit old fashioned? i.e low to medium contrast? Because I don't want to have a modern type lens with a lot of contrast (B&W work), I wonder if I could use this instead of say Summarit or Collapsible cron because it's so small! Although I love the softness of the Summarit...

There are two versions: Single coated and Multi coated. Look for the S.C. as it has lower contrast.

I just bought one of these lenses. I wasn't planning on it, but I was offered a nice SC version at a good price. I couldn't resist...
I can't wait to get it in the mail and start to use it.

Anyone have any visual guide as to how much difference the 40mm is in comparison to 50mm and 35mm?

Received the lens yesterday. I'm very pleased with the build quality. It's very compact, yet very dense. I can't wait to use it.

I think it's a toss-up. The Nokton produces an image that is just a shade warmer, and it may be a tad sharper. The Rokkor more than holds its own. I don't think this shot shows off the micro-contrast of the Rokkor, which may be its strong suit. If you don't need 1.4, choose based on price and sample condition.
