The Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f2.0...

I use it on an M240. I tested for focus shift and couldn't see any. I bought it new in Feb 2019 so maybe it has been improved quietly. I think it is a fantastic lens. A couple of examples below, all at f8.

I’m not seeing any of those images. Just a blank filler with ‘Content protected by owner’

The second photo is of a large Tesla Coil, which was one of the art installations. Very cool :)

I would appreciate if anyone could share their experiences with this lens, good and bad. Even better, if someone could compare its use with the Zeiss Biogon 2.8/28. Many thanks, OtL

I can't compare, because I have only the Ultron and I'm very glad I do. For me, it was the price that won the purchase. The Zeiss and Leica are much more expensive, so the CV gave me access to an affordable M mount 28 without finding a true vintage lens.

I like its size and heft. Compact and substantial. I use it only on B&W film with an M4-2. I frame by filling the viewfinder. I zone focus or hyperfocus most of the time, so the tab is great for finding my place quickly. It also makes focusing close at wider apertures easy.

Since I digitalize everything anyway, contrast and tonal values are really a processing issue but I can't honestly say that I can make as beautiful an image with the Ultron as I can with my 50 Summicron. I can't get the depth through the tonal range in the same way. Practice, perhaps.

I've shot both the 28mm Zeiss Biogon ZM and the 28mm Viogtlander Ultron VM, just not at the same time.

When the Voigtlander first came out I was sent a copy to test against my Leica 28mm Summicron-M. Of course, the Leica blew the Ultron away - but not wide open (where they were very close). However, as they were stopped down the Leica improved dramatically, while the Voigtlander did not.

I've owned the 28mm Zeiss Biogon ZM and was never dissatisfied with its performance. I only sold it because I also have the 25mm Zeiss Biogon ZM, which marginally outperforms the 28mm ZM stop-to-stop and I like the extra room in the corners the 25mm FL provides.

In summary, I can say the Voitlander is very consistent stop-to-stop, but mediocre at its optimum apertures compared to its Zeiss competitor. If it had some "character" to compensate for not being particularly harp, it'd be different, but as it is, I personally cannot recommend the Voigtlander - even for the extra stop it provides.

To be reasonable though, is it "sharp enough" for most shooters? Probably - as long as you don't try comparing it to the Zeiss.

The Ultron is a very nice lens. Stopped down, it produces really nice results. It's a little larger than my other two 28mm lenses, but not a problem in practice. I use the screw-on hood, but that does make a lens cap more fiddly.

I don't shoot with mine much any more because I prefer the output and handling of the Leica 28mm Summicron (v1).
