My wife and returned to our home Saturday evening to find our front door smashed in an the entire house ransacked.

The thieves took every camera and lens I own, even my iPhone. I have heard that there are several websites that track camera and lens serial numbers.

Can anyone recommend where one would register their lost equip?

I lost a complete Leica system M 240, Monochrome, and several Summiluxs and Summicrons Plus a complete Canon system - 5DII and a slew of L lenses.

That truly sucks. I hope your equipment was covered on your homeowners insurance policy!

I'm sure you can list the Leica equipment and serial numbers on the Leica Members area at least, somewhere.

I would post a list of your stolen equipment here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/
here http://stolen911.com/stolen-property/electronics-theft/camera-theft/
here http://photo.net/registry/
here https://www.facebook.com/StolenCameraFinder
and here http://www.stolenlostfound.org/report-stolen-camera

I hope you will recover your equipment, and that it will be in the same condition as when you last saw it. This kind of thing is an outrage, but it happens often.

For future protection, there is Lenstag: https://www.lenstag.com/ Your story has made me seriously consider using Lenstag, even though my gear is fully insured through ASMP.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

What I don't understand is why people don't make a small investment in a safe. I own two large ones with all my photo equipment and valuables in them. They're a small investment compared to what you'll put In them.

Theft

Tanks for the comments.

My homeowner's insurance covers that loss, but it is a $5000 deductible. So this is a big reversal for us!

The safe is something I am considering more. It's a good idea.

We have always lived in the country in very small communities and have never felt the need for complicated security systems and gates. That has changed.

x-ray, YOU hit the nail right on the head.

You and I are on a parallel course with two large safes. LX-50's for me. A few items by themselves are worth more than what those two safes cost me. PLUS fire protection for those valuables if the house burns down.

Steve, I truly hope things go well and your items are recovered safe and sound.

Rural areas are often much worse than the city these days.

I just use a Knaack box, cheap, and when bolted to the floor, not easy to get through or out the door. http://www.knaack.com/

Steve, so sorry for this, that had to be a real shock for you and your wife.

I suspect that someone in your small community knows expensive gear when they see it. That said they might still be idiots and take it to a pawn shop. You can at least check places in your area.

My disgust for those who do such things is deeper than I can describe.

I have put off buying a safe for too long. My wife and I finally talked ourselves into getting one, but we continue to drag our feet with follow through. Why? Because we live in a "safe" neighborhood and have become complacent.

Around here, drugs are the major motivation for senseless burglaries. The idiots don't know the difference between Leica and cheap Kodak. They take it all and offer them to the local drug dealer for ridiculous "discount". Then the bas***d dealers have nice gear. Isn't that great?

Eh, I'm ranting and I'm not the one who was violated. I'm truly, deeply sorry to hear about your loss SteveHicks.

Steve,
Geez!! That sucks. Rotten bast***s.
Maybe they're dumb enough to try to sell your stuff on Craigslist.
You should try checking Craigslist around your area and even look on Ebay.
Hope you catch the scum and get your equipment back.

A fireproof safe won't protect most valuables like cameras. The fire rating of the safe is based on the burning point of paper, which is relatively hot. The humidity in the safe becomes superheated steam which does a really number on finishes. The safe company told me to put my cameras in tuppreware containers.as the best solution.

I do keep my cameras and valuable papers in a large gun safe.

My wife and I never leave valuables like watches, cameras and fountain pens and even cash out when we leave home. We always lock them In our safes. We even lock up our laptop computers. I learned a lesson a couple of years ago. We were having our home remodeled and one of the construction workers stole codine from my bathroom vanity. I had it for a root canal and left it In a drawer. My mistake. Anything like that now stays locked in the safe.

When you have a safe you can leave home on vacation with the confidence your valuables will still be there when you return home.

We live in a very nce upscale neighborhood. A few years ago we lived on a golf course. I had mowed my lawn and left my mower in my driveway to cool while I went in to get some water and when I returned to put it away five minutes later it was gone. My wife's alloy wheels were stolen off her car one nigh also. I forgot to put it in the garage and the next morning it was sitting on logs from my woodpile and the wheels were gone. Also my neighbors 57 Corvet was stolen from his driveway in broad daylight.

Your valuables aren't safe anywhere now. The best protection is to lock them up and make it as hard as you can for thieves.

I am so sorry to hear of this. A violation. Personal.

We have a rural home and twelve CCTV cameras which feed a large hard drive. It streams to any web-enabled device.

Costco carries them for less than $500.

Twice we have had people enter our driveway (long, over 1 mile) and stop at the first two cameras which are in plain sight. They reversed course and left.

On one of the occasions that this happened, our neighbor's shed was broken into and when they told us about it, we checked the dates. Sure enough, a match. I gave a screen grab to her of the truck that was in our driveway, and, sure enough again, it led to the thief. The other time? Who knows...

what Fred said. I have a Greenlee contractor box that's secured with heavy duty cable to concrete column and also several large pelicans. hidden under a pile of random cardboard boxes. tempted to put a really, really large one in the garage instead of the house.

Good points, Beemermark. House fires are something we all dread but fortunately seldom have to deal with. And gun stocks and grips may require refinishing or replacement although the guns would survive and still be operable.

Thanks for the tip about the Tupperware!

My friend's rifles (in a $2000 safe) after a house fire looked like they had soaked in salt water for 100 years. They did still function and after refinishing (which ain't cheap) looked decent.

That sucks. We had a burglar in da house a year ago, easter monday at 4am. We woke up on the noise he made while inspecting a whisky bottle:))
He took some low value, old laptops and a small dslr set , total maybe 1500 bucks, which was all nicely refunded by insurance. And the above mentioned whisky he took it too.
No big loss.
But we were having trouble sleeping for several months after this. It just gets in your head and you start hearing noises in the night. Very annoying.
On the other hand... What kind of life is that, when you need to pack your cameras etc into a safe each time you get out of the house?
