Did they zoom in with the magnifying lens and all the little grains were shaped like Batsignals?

No, unfortunately. It did give them a clue in their search for the kidnapped Commodore Schmidlapp!

Fine grain films

It doesn't qualify as "batgrain" but my favorite fine grain film was Ilford Pan F. It wasn't the finest grain of the fine grain films nor was it the sharpest but the tonality was gorgeous. The contrast was also much easier to control than Kodak's Panatomic X or like films from Agfa and others. I see it's still being made but I'm not sure it's the same Pan F recipe I recall. I haven't shot film in about 10 years and many things change with time.
