Things that can mess up your whole day.

Phil,
Happy that you got that sorted out, but it happens to all of us!
I was planning to go to the Royal Gorge to hike and make a few photos as well as a picnic lunch with my bride. Then I noticed a silver screw sticking out of my left rear tire. These are Continental all weather 80,000 mile tires with about 30,000 miles on them. The screw is between the sidewall and the tread and they won't repair it. So a new set of tires for me as well. I will try again next week to visit the gorge. It is worth the drive !

Yes, one of the best scenic sites ever! Maybe you could have just gotten the tire re-balanced. Next vehicle I'm going with real 4 wheel drive, no more any of this never knowing just what configuration the thing is in.

My brother-in-law lives on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains and does a bit of off roading. He was telling me that true four wheel drive is hard to find these days. Kind of limited to Jeep and Nissan Exterra. Most all others are "all wheel drive" and like you said, it's just not the same. He has an Extrra and loves it.

I probably would have to go with a Bronco, as the Sport version is nothing more than a ruggedized Escape.

I wonder what T. H. O'Sullivan would make of this discussion. If you read some of the accounts of the survey expeditions, we all wind up sounding like a bunch of wussies. Our "bad days" would be luxurious walk in the park in comparison to his good ones!
And he still came back with some damn fine photos...
