I love my summicron asph, but want something faster...
I know the zeiss is significantly bigger, other than the size, how does it compare to the summicron?

Please share your thought, if this has been posted, I am sorry.

I have both and though the Summicron 35f2 Asph is sharp,it is a bit too clinical for me. Looks a bit like scalpel cut edges. I do use it, but mostly when I am trying out a developer or a film for edgy negatives.
The Distagon 35f1.4 is smoother in its rendition and quite remarkable at f1.4. It is big though and having it on the shoulder strap and around the neck. you know it is there.

I am willing to sacrifice the size for a smooth rendering!🙂

I have the ASPH Summicron and love it but I also have a couple of other 35s' for a different look. If you are looking for a faster lens and don't want to spend the money for a Summilux then the Zeiss is a good choice. If you have some extra cash after selling the Summicron, pick up a 35 Voigtlander Color-Skopar for a walking around lens. Good Luck.

The color skopar was my very first m lens. Too bad never tried it on a digital body...I miss the size of it.

The Zeiss is fairly large, but not very heavy. I feel like it balances well on the M's, especially the 240. Optically it's incredible, and I'd bet my lens it betters or equals a Lux ASPH FLE, for a fraction of the price. 😉

I have the same idea of selling my Summicron asph for the Zeiss 35/1.4 but my 'Cron is the limited ltm version am thinking and thinking!

Well, that should get you a better price on sale.
I must confess I never warmed to Leica's Summilux asph versions, preferring the Summicron asph, if I had the idea to buy a 35-1.4 I would go for the Distagon any day.

I tried them both, and the Zeiss lens gives the images a transparancy and lightness that I do not find in the Summilux.

I think the Cron Asph renders plenty smoothly. It's about using the light.
Harsh light will result in harsh contrast and give the impression of harsh rendering. Light your subject the way you want it to appear.

I am in the same situation like you ..

Summicron 35 asph and ZM 35 1.4
after using both ... I mostly choose zeiss 35 1.4 for assignments ..

Cron is sold ... but for daily street and stuff .. I keep using old hexanon uc 35

that zeiss never stop to amaze me .. i can predict the results in my head with it ...

Sincerely
William Jusuf

Impressive photograph and demonstration of the point that all good photos are about what the lens is pointing at: the subject, composition and the light. Differences in lens renderings – bokeh and sharpness – are secondary considerations by far.

The ZM lens looks like it might be the "best" 35mm M lens you can buy but I doubt it is worth selling a Summicron for.

Agree with Huss and Ian. It's all about the light. I have tried all the VC options (1.2, 1.4, 1.7, 2.5) and 2 summicron v4 vs asph. In actual use, they all produce superb images if the light is nice and the subject/content is interesting. however in handling i like the cron asph the best, not too small (vc 2.5/1.7 and cron v4 is a bit tight), not too big (vc 1.2/zeiss 1.4 are about the same size). you have to try before you know what you like. All about handling, image quality is all amazingly good.

I have had a similar dilemma whith my old trusty 50mm f2 DR Summicron any my desire to get a Zeiss 50mm f1.5 ZM. The DR has been a workhorse for me but showed its age with general wear and a small chip on the front element which doesn't affect the image as far as I can tell. So I bought the Zeiss and sent the DR off to DAG for a CLA and a rear helical mod for my M240. Just got it back and it looks and works great. To make a short story long the Zeiss has great Bokeh and sharpness with a film like quality on the M240 but so does the DR. So now I have both. It is really what's in front of the lens and you really can't "Buy" a great image. It was a cheap lesson for me. BTW the DR weights at least 3X more than the Zeiss LOL!
