Thinking about real Contax...(kinda long post)

Dan,
The coating process was developed in Jena before the war and remained proprietary there until a period after the war. For a while (I'd have to look up the dates) lenses made in West Germany, as your was, were not coated. Eventually the West German lenses were also coated and are marked with the same red "T."

Hi Honu
I believe this lens is the latest Coated Carl Zeiss from West Germany (they use Zeiss-opton before). the SN is kind of very late production number. I have not seen T on West Germany lens so far, maybe I only see very few.

So much for my memory :)..."With the introduction of the Carl Zeiss trademark the "T" was dropped. Lenses were understood to be coated." Sorry for the confusion -- I may have "Mad Cow" disease like Denny Crane (I'm watching "Boston Legal" at the moment :D).

Here's my homage to the Contax

I probably should update the prices on the lens page. As Mike noted, the 35mm Biogon has risen, while the 21mm Biogon has dropped.

The 85mm Triotar and the 135mm Sonnar are both excellent lenses and probably represent the bargains in the postwar lenses. The postwar f/2.0 Sonnar also is quite good.

The only downside of the prewar collapsible Sonnar is in finding one whose front element isn't scratched to hell and back.

I wanted to say that I found your site previously on the net and loved it! I didn't knew you were a fellow RFF member ;)

I'm actually very fond of the prewar Contax-II design, my Kiev-2A from 1956 reminds me the way the Contax looks... and I'm looking forward to get one. It is a pity that my local store had one and that someone bought it, but heh, I'm not so rich and I've also to deal with the daily material needs... and what did I see yesterday!!!! A J-9 85/2 in Kiev mount and another Kiev-2A! ;) I think those will soon enough join the collection ;)
