So we have violated the corpse of this horse once again. No matter that the experience of so many is that the ZM focus shift is 1) easily compensated for, 2) not a consideration in practice, or 3) a figment of a fervid imagination, there are a few that continue to insist that this issue is a BIG DEAL. I guess it is time to start a poll.

Thank you all, this made it much clearer. Especially thanks to those of you that posted photos - that was exactly what I was hoping for!
For one, it seems the f/2.8 "version" is the one I would go for, if I were to buy it. But I'll pass for now. Like others have said, I hate to turn the joy of photography into some mental game where you have to compensate. In my case, "softness" is fine, but "mis-focus" is not.
