Canon LTM Thinking about this IIF2

Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
The price looks high unless the camera and lens had a recent CLA. The lens should go for $150-200 and a body in an unknown internal state anywhere between $150-250. Sold as a kit, I'd expect closer to $350-400.

A beautiful camera. The IIf2 has the improved viewfinder so it’s not quite as squinty as earlier bottom-loading Canon’s. $675.00 seems high, but, since not many were made, you’re probably paying for it’s collector value. You can probably land a better deal on a similar bottom-loading Canon over at KEH. Check out the Canon Museum for more info on the camera:

For reference, KEH has an IVSB2 in EX condition for $278 and a later black 50mm/1.8 (also EX) for $313.

Honestly, you could get a nice Canon 50/1.4 for that price. They are in the $275-350 range. The KEH Canon lens prices seem abnormally high but at least they you have more of a guarantee with them.

KEH seems to be playing the "What can I get away with?" game lately with their Canon RF lens pricing. A 50mm f1.8 is a good deal for $150, not for $300. Even ebay is undercutting them, which practically never happened before.

Agreed, I haven't seen prices this high anywhere else for Canon 50s.

I mean, they have a silver 50mm 1.8 for $432! Recent completed sales on ebay top out around $200 with many under $100. First time I've seen KEH prices this out of whack.

That looks like a consignment site. They've only got three cameras, all well into the collectors/antique shop range of pricing.

Went back and looked through all the photos. Didn't realize there was extra goodies to go with it. So if you were to take all the bits, and price them separately, you might come up with their asking price. But that is still towards the upper end of the spectrum. Especially since the lens looks like it has some sort of internal scratches, and plenty of dust. The flash unit is nice, but who uses them anymore. The ERC for the camera is in really good shape, and the fact the camera is an EP model holds some cachet for collectors. The original cable release is a plus.

Even if you were really going to use the extras I think its high. Looks like the body is very nice however the lens and body may need a service then it would be over the top.

The Canon P is a better camera but if you want to get into bottomloader Canons, the IIF2 is one of the rarest of the lot and in reality as useful as its improved siblings, like the top of the line IVSb2 bottomloader Canon in actual use.

Thank you all for your insight and comments!
Still considering. I had a brief text-chat with the seller and got a little more info…

RE Consign? Seller wrote:
"I do not do consignments, never yet anyway. I own my merch. Have sold dozens of cameras but down to just three right now, got a few more to list, but mostly I've just not replenished inventory lately. BTW, if you visit my SOLD page, you can see a few of the cameras I've sold."

RE CLA ?
"Nope, no CLA or inspection. I won this camera at a local auction, it was just as clean as you see it now, all I did was a quick wipe of the lens with a micro-cloth, stepped through operation/controls, then into my photo softbox for listing. While I am no expert on vintage RFs, I did grow up using RFs (and studied photography for a while) and this camera appears fully functional, to my eyes at least (please carefully read the desc.) I'm less certain of the coatings on the lens, but have tried to show that in pics.

I don't know if it will help you decide, but I will post an ops video on the item's photos-page later today or tomorrow."

One thing worth pointing out is that this includes a flash that connects with that non-standard flash sync connector rail thingy. Those are really hard to find. Some of the price is there. Still, that's probably more value to a collector than a user.

I think very highly of these series of Canons as users. I have and use a IIS2 and a recently acquired IVSB2.

You have to assume the camera will need service ..... you might be lucky but why depend on luck when you are paying top dollar.

This seller is 2 or 3 times higher than the going rate. With his answers of "...got it at a local auction (for $75 probably)....know nothing about rangefinders (right, that's why you bought it)....just wiped it off (Canon's always look great on the outside)..." I'd pass. You can get one with the same uncertainty for about $250.

IIf2

IIf2

I bought a IIf2 with a Canon 50 f1.8 a few years ago... I really like the variable magnification for the viewfinder. I think I paid about about $250.00, but further invested in CLA another $200. The total investment seems very realistic today. A great Barnack camera to use, and I expect will hold its value, if not improve.

Recommend.

Greetings, I stumbled upon this thread a few months back; I am the person offering this Canon IIF2; I thought I would set the record straight on some of the speculation above.

NOT a consignment site! Although I have not been all that active buying/selling these past few years, I did for years attend two or three local auctions every week.

Thank you farlymac for noting the ERC, the fact the camera is an EP model, and that its original cable release is included.

Yes. I believe that the flash, the original Canon cable release, and the (in particularly notable condition) ERC all add value to this package, for a collector, than, say, somebody looking for an RF to snap pics of their spouse while out for Sunday drive/ride in their same-vintage Morris Mini Minor or R50 Earles-fork Beemer ;~)

1. Regarding the price, Please consider what is included. I paid a lot more than $75 — and, by the way, that was back around 2007/8 that I purchased this camera outfit.

2. It is true that after wining this at (one of the then three) Burlington NJ regularly scheduled estate sale auctions, that all I did was inspect it, put it through its functionality checks, then photograph pack and list.

3. It is not true that I “know nothing about rangefinders” — I was an avid photographer starting at about age 10; that’d be nearly 5 decades ago. My first camera was an all-plastic Argus 127-format; I still have most of the 35mm cameras that I used as a kid and young adult sitting on a dresser … couple of Retinas, Petri Color 35, Bolsey Model C twins-lens and some others. Later, SLR-wise, mostly I used Pentax … K1000, MX, bunch of LX … and I still have a footlocker full of Pentax prime lenses. I like cameras :)

I also studied photojournalism for a time and processed a ton of 35mm (BW and color), and a modest amount of 4x5 … spent many hours printing BW and Cibachrome. I’ve used a few 35mm RF over the years, including a Leica M6.

I was quoted above as saying I am not an expert — I did not say that I know nothing of vintage rangefinders.

One last thing: Yes, I have had this camera listed for a long time, but it has NOT been sitting around on a shelf gathering dust! At the time that I photographed it, it was packed ready to ship. Body lens and ERC in a sealed plastic bag with packets of silica gel. Those pics are with the listing.

Yes, for sure it deserves a CLA before you pop in a roll of HP5 to shoot at your kid’s wedding, but cosmetically the body is in near mint condition, with absolutely no telltales or hints of ever being disassembled. The lens is dusty and may (or may not) have an issue or two. Best on that is for you to carefully study all of the photos. Get in touch with me if you need to see any larger-format versions of what is posted.

Thanks for taking the time to read this (overly long) post.

Interesting... After five years it appears this Canon gear may be still for sale. Since we do not do any buying or selling in the RFF discussion threads --only in our Classifieds-- please post a Class ad and/or conduct any further sales efforts and negotiations by PM or email. Thanks! :)

I think the fact that it is still for sale after 5 years speaks for itself. It was overpriced then and it is still overpriced.
I sold a very nice iif2 with a f1.8 for 300$ and it took 3 months to find a buyer. With the extras I think the most someone would pay is 400.

The iif2 is only slightly different than the iis2. But I would much rather have a iid2 because it's does not have the side rail or the ivsb2 for the 1/1000 top shutter speed.

Just about every iif2 I've seen has been in mint condition. They were sold just as everyone was jumping to SLR s and so often had little use.
