thinking of a tablet

Personally, I disagree with all of the hardware recommendations so far.

There are 3 tablet OS choices, not just 2 (I don't count Windows/RT as viable). Most, by population, tablets run one of the two restricted and limited OSs; iOS (iPad line) or Android. The third is a full open OS, Windows 8.1, which can be a better choice for photographers who's usage requires more file handling at the OS level than is easy to do with the restricted OSs.

I've recently replaced my antique Dell laptop running WinXP with an 8" "mini" sized tablet running Win8.1. I have the Dell Venue 8 Pro/32g model. There are a number of competing devices.

The advantage of Win8.1 over iOS and Android is that it runs standard Windows desktop applications as well as the Windows "Modern UI" tablet apps. My Dell V8p, like most of the competing devices, has a mirco-SD/XC slot to support a "drive D" and a micro-USB port that, with an OTG adapter, supports any USB device that will work with any other Windows 8 machine. Devices that require significant power from their host (e.g. some external hard drives, ...) do have to be connect via a powered hub since the little tablet can't provide much power to the connect device. This power issue is also present in any of the Android or iOS devices that support USB accessories.

I use this device primarily as a casual web-surfing and entertainment device and will probably migrate my ebook reading to it from my older Kindle. I have LR4.4 installed on "drive D" along with the standard versions of Firefox and Opera browsers.

LR is impossible to use with only a touch screen, but with TouchMousePointer installed (places a laptop like trackpad with buttons onscreen) it is functional.

Reading PDFs can be an issue on any "mini" class 8" device. Many PDFs found in the wild are designed for printing on letter sized or larger paper or display on large monitors. These become unreadable on a small screen unless you can zoom in to an area and scroll around (a big pain). the larger 10-12" devices handle these PDFs much better.

I suggest that you check out Chippy Paine's UMPC Portal ( http://www.umpcportal.com/ ), or his YouTube videos, for some good overviews of Win8.1 devices.

I use an IPad-2. It is very good for checking emails and for viewing images or documents. I used to take with me a laptop computer when I travel, but now I take the Ipad instead.

I bought a Nexus 7 in january or so, because I got tired of printing out dozens of essays my professors wanted me to read. I found the display too small for any 'serious' reading (both PDFs and internet; not even talking about marking text) and would therefore recommend a full-sized tablet with whatever OS you prefer.
