Thinking of trading my MP for a M7? Anybody done the same?

Buy a (spot) meter, learn the sunny 16 and you're done. For shooting slides situation might differ, personally I don't do slides, just B/W.
Perfection is boring, adaptive metering makes an image come to life and I think that's what Leica stuff is made for.... (just my thoughts)

I am ok with sunny 16 but very very slow and find myself thinking bout exposures most of the time rather than taking shots. Because of that I am always fiddling with my camera - and I carry 2 bodies. Sometimes I don't have enough fingers !! Haha

If I sell my MP I'd still have my M4. I am aware that they have stopped production of MPs and prices are rising. I can afford a M7 without selling my MP but I don't want to have camera that I don't use. Not when it is a MP.
Can't imagine myself ever bring 3 M bodies.

I think so far, there are good points either way. Enjoy reading this thread.

If you can afford the M7 without selling the MP, then buy it and see how you like it. If you choose to sell one or the other, shouldn't have any problems. Especially the MP.

The MP made me think about lighting and I can usually come close to picking the right settings. It's easy to over or underexpose based on what I know is a backlit or dark scene and all that (easier to it with the aperture ring than say dialing in exposure compensation on the M7)

The M7, for me, IS faster to use. The meter is fairly accurate, but I don't find myself looking at the shutter speed it's chosen so sometimes I'm off. Especially when the shutter speed is 1/8th of a second and I'm not that tripod-like steady to pull off a crisp shot. So, the M7 has made me a little lazier, but now I take photos like I have for years, with AE.

My course... bought an MP and really liked it, then bought an R4A to use with a 21mm lens. Didn't really like 21mm angle of view so sold the lens and tried to sell the body. Couldn't sell the body so picked up a 25mm lens. (I know how crazy this all is!) Really like the AE and got an M7 .85x. Have seriously considered selling the MP. Until I took some photos of it and there is something about the look of the damn thing that makes me want to keep it!

But if the price of MPs continues to go up, I'll probably part with it, buy a NEX-7 and have a digital M that costs 6 times less than an M9 and use that for digital work.

I recently went in the opposite direction, M7 to MP.

I wanted to 'not' have the AE option and be forced to slow down and set the aperture/exposure for each shot.

There are a lot of used M7's on the market, perhaps you should pick one up use for a month then make a decision. M7's are easier to pick up then a MP.

Good luck with your decision.

AE is a great tool. It's 100% great when it's used correctly: half the scenes accept a direct shutter release (real AE), and some others require compensation or exposure lock (metering other zone)... It's the photographer -while using AE- who gets correct exposure or not depending on the good or bad understanding of camera's meter...

I find AE cameras are a truly valuable tool in lots of situations... And for back light or pushed film, caring a bit gives you perfect exposure... No doubt an AE camera can do a lot for the photographer in those scenes (really common) where it can be used without exposure lock. And AE cameras can be used as non AE ones anytime...

I'd keep the MP because it's a wonderful, durable camera, and it's metered... And I'd buy an AE one.

Cheers,

Juan
