Pending payment, my Canon L1 will be heading off to a new home with another member early next week. I'm gradually passing on the cameras I'm not using, and aim to keep probably only the M4 (my favourite because it best suits my eyesight and spectacles) one Canon P as backup (because it was my first high-quality rangefinder, and remains the next-best thing after the M4), and the IVSB (because it represents the earlier generation of high-quality RF cameras).

The cash returned from sales will be reinvested in lenses as well as a photoshop training course, and perhaps a better printer, so I can work on some of my better photos.

That's my next big challenge, to learn to get a decent print out of the photos I like. That will mean learning about calibrating monitor and printer, for starters, and maybe upgrading the old computer to something that can handle a decent-sized image file.

And I have set myself a photo project - to capture images of all the memorials along Anzac Parade here in Canberra, the national memorials to those in the Services and service organisations, in a cohesive collection. Never tried anything like that before, so it will be interesting.

Hi Chris,

Great minds think alike. I just started a PS class this week. As I told the instuctor, I've dabbled around with it but really want to learn how to use it in an organized fashion.

Then, like you, I want to get into printing.

The school where I'm taking the course has a brand new photo facility with high-end Macs and really nice Epson printers (not sure of the model) so I'll probably get "spoiled".

Anyway, perhaps in a while we can exchange notes on printers etc. since we're both going to PS "experts". 😀

My biggest challenge at the moment is to finally decide on what film to shoot for both colour and B&W on MF and 35mm. I've been experimenting with lots of stuff recently and just got 12 mixed rolls back. Some Fuji astia shot with the bronica and the M6 and at first glance it looks very nice indeed. Some FP4, some XP2 100 and some Delta 100 and 400. Once I get some of this stuff scanned I can finally make my mind up and get back on the photography track. Of course, then I'll need to think of a project.

Good night all - my weekend starts in eight hours, and Monday is a holiday. I'm going bush for three days, and the forecast is for rain.

Have a great weekend everybody!

A few weeks ago I started on a project to interview and document tricycle rickshaw drivers here in Chiang Mai. Many of them have been driving the same trike for 40 years, but they are now crowded out by numerous motorized taxi services. These guys are probably the last generation. A lot of them sleep in their trikes and on good days pull 4 or 5 fares, at 50 cents a ride.

As I do it and have good days and bad days, I'm more certain this is a direction I want to follow. I'd also like to find a mentor or someone to intern under. I think I still need to acquire some technical and practical experience to fully benefit from that, though, but I hope to be in that position soon.

I'm really not a planner, but having this one task and a vague direction feels really good.

Rick
how about contacting John Vink via the Lightstalkers site?
He's working in Camboida but may know someone who can help you.
We can talk about this when we meet up in BKK if you like?
FWIW that's a good project you are working on these guys get squeezed out in every town. Will you post the results on RFF?

sorry this was addressed to Rick and maybe OT

thanks, Simon; I really appreciate the encouragement, and the idea to contact Vink. I don't want to pull away from the thread too much, but I'll definitely post results here, probably in chunks as I get good sets. I have a few more outings I want to do with one driver, and then editing/writing of the first batch.

To swing back on topic, I'm really feeling the photoshop blues too.

I too would like to sell some equipment... Unfortunately, I don't know what to sell 😉 As far as projects goes, this summer I'm hoping to shoot/document (probably including audio and text) children living in the Palestinian refugee camps, and the horrible conditions in (tuberculosis-)hospitals in Romania.

Rick, sounds like a very interesting project and I look forward to the first sets of photos!
