I read somewhere about a third party hood/shade for the 28mm 2.0 Summicron ASPH that didn't get in the way of the viewfinder as much as the stock unit. Can anyone tell me anything about such an item. I'm having trouble finding it.

Try heavystar or American_Eagle on eBay. Here is heavystar's link, enter the lens filter size and the word "hood" in the Store Search entry field and click Search:

Leica doesn't do a good job with hoods at all. As you say Vic, too big and bulky. I use the screw-in heavystar hoods on as many lenses as I can and leave them on all the time (don't use lens caps). The only lens this strategy hasn't worked for is the 24/2.8; I got vignetting/light falloff and I have to use the original Leica hood on that lens.Vic said:I use a Contax GG-2 hood (round metal) with the 35mm Summilux Asph. It is better than the dedicated Leica hood.
The Leica 28mm Summicron hood is an abomination. Too big and too bulky.

The Leica hood for the 35mm ASPH Summilux will fit and lock on to the 28mm Summicron even with the UV-IR cut filter mounted. There is a cut out in one corner though which you can see. It has a slide on rubber cap and it's much smaller than the original lens hood. There's no vignetting on the M8.
