Their movie film business dwarfs the photography film business. For 35mm film at 25 frames/sec, an hour of film is equivalent to 90.000 frames. And at 16 frames per foot this is equivalent to 5625 feet of film. In other words, an hour of 35mm movie film is equivalent to 1000 film canisters.
The movie segment will go digital at some point, too, but I don't see that happening this year. Does he have a prediction for movie film, too? Otherwise I'll continue to shoot Kodak 5285 for a while as I do now.

If Kodak dump film, it will be good for Ilford and Fuji but one has to hope that Tri-X will still be made. So many love it and though enjoying a small bit of it in 120 Im a HP5 guy at heart.
Funny though I worked for a large PC retailer here and half the people who came in to buy a small digi cam who saw me bought scanners with a film bed. I gave them the option of putting all their old photos on to a pc and being able to do print on demand books etc. One guy came back and asked for advice on buying a better film camera, a lot of them realized that they only shot a roll or two a year and the digi cam would not be worth it. I was asked by head office how I managed to sell so many scanners too.

Kodak selling the film divison might be the best thing that can happen. Right now, "film being in the red" includes a lot of accounting. How much of the expenses includes estimates of pension obligations, debt, and depreciation.
Selling would allow the buyer to have clean slate. I also wouldn't want to be a Kodak bondholder.
Point and shoot cameras might fail faster than film, because many in that market are now using their cell phones.

If they screw those people out of their pensions so a venture capital firm can complete their bust out I'll never buy another roll of kodak, even tri x.
They've been quite honorable so far, there are many Kodak retirees close to me and they do well.
But you are welcome to buy film made in other countries by companies that barely pay their workers anything or follow any environment rules.

Bingo. I wonder after all is said and done how much money Nikon actually makes on a D700?
And al1966, thank you!

Kodak has pension and postretirement liabilities of $2,682 million, and other liabilities (probably also employee-related) of an additional $626 million. You can just go to Kodak.com and look for yourself instead of moaning and groaning.
Kodak is probably going to go through bankruptcy eventually. That doesn't mean they stop making film though.

Don't tempt fate!
This was never about film V digital ... it's about what the powers that be at Eastman Kodak may be about to do in the coming year and the interesting fact that the president of a securities company, who also happens to be an avid photographer, has predicted that Kodak may ditch the film line in 2011.

I amazed at the negative attitudes towards pensions and medical insurance! Thanks for working for us! The curb is that way! You can always be a greeter at Wal-Mart!

Truth is beauty
We will have black and white film for the rest of our lives. And for centuries. It doesn't depend on Kodak or any other brand, but on what we like. If we didn't like it, then it would be another story. Do we like it? Yes, WE like it. It's not too hard to make B&W film. People would even prepare and make manual substitutes with emulsions and keep having lots of fun. It's a game: Homo Ludens... And we'll see new film cameras too. Some of us will die seeing new films and new film cameras, and some others will die wondering "why hasn't all this stopped?"

Juan

Incidentally, this is also where Fotokemika (who makes Efke films) can be expected to close as soon as Croatia joins the EU and EU environmental regulations come into force.
I suggest you buy Foma films instead. The Czech have done the necessary investments on time and are producing in accordance with EU environmental and labour laws.

Although I'm failing to see the difference between smiley face United States and "other countries by companies that barely pay their workers anything or follow any environment rules."
A race to the bottom, something a buffoon like me can really get behind!

I like the Efke films!
This is where the labor laws get me. What good are labor laws if they cause you to lose your job? Many politicians think corporations are brimming with cash, but in reality, most are struggling to make ends meet.

At this point all the studios are archiving their motion pictures on film - even the ones produced entirely in the digital world.
Until a less expensive equally reliable archiving method comes along they will be using film at least for this purpose!
