I use the street mamiya c 33, Zeiss Ikon Collapsible 6X6 rangefinder, kiev 4, leicaiiic and a minolta srt 101 regal anything can fontion in the street

really, there are no rules for tools for such photography.
i shot some "street" during an oktoberfest event this weekend. i used three film cameras: my own IIIf, dave lackey's leica-r slr with AE and his m3. i think i would have done just as well with an AF digital cam, small or large or in-between. in the festive atmosphere no one paid any mind to the man in the yellow t-shirt with a little camera, a medium camera and a somewhat large-ish slr, sometimes with one draped on his neck and another in his hands. it seemed as if every adult and every child from 10 up had a phone camera or digital camera in his or her hands, snapping away. i was just part of the snap-happy crowd.

i shoot with whatever camera i have with me..

on my X100 i rely on the AF for street shots, MF for close-ups

on the other RFs such as M9/6 and R2, i try to get max DOF via f8-16 dep on avail light, and yes i shot prefocus for street..

but there are times i just want to use my other camera, or simply when i'm feeling lazy.. then i use my Hexar AF, or GR1..

i think color doesnt matter (just an excuse for me to have all sorts of cameras), it's just your whole demeanor and style 🙂

this is cliche but really, a smile works wonders..

this year I preferred my D-Lux5 with its really great vario-lens, carried it in my hand and used it in normal way, sometimes during walking, somtimes sittin' and waiting; used different focal lenghts

Street photography is not for me! I tried but found it daunting; it doesn't help that my favourite camera is a Nikon f4 with a 28/f2 Ai which is like a ballistic missile, i really prefer stories. It take a real talent to be a good street photographer an an amount if bravery. I don't see the point in photographing bikes and people from across the road. I got some good shots in a pub one night but I was drunk! If I were to do it it would be f4 28mm manual focus, f8 and go from there with a hand held meter.

If you are shootig a Leica all manual film camera what should the shutter speed be if your are walking slowly and your subject is stationary. Say a 35mm lens?

Thanks
Jim
